Back in February I took a call from a vet in Milton Keynes asking if Oldies Club could find an emergency space for an elderly staffie girl who had been brought in by the RSPCA. She was bone thin and had terrible skin problems, but despite it all her little tail never stopped wagging and all she wanted to do was cuddle up to whoever was near her.
The vet was particularly upset because she'd treated her a few months earlier when she'd been picked up as a stray in a bad way, and was horrified to find she'd been returned to her owners after that and was now back in even worse condition. This time the owners' didn't want her back, and due to her age and condition she would almost certainly have been put to sleep.
The vet provisionally called her 'Mattie' and sent us this picture of her:
We managed to get her into a foster home the next day. She proved to be a lovely placid girl and was wonderful with the other dogs, cats and children in her foster home. She put on weight and condition and her skin cleared up.
Finally after a long recovery period, she want off to her new permanent home a couple of weeks ago. Amazingly I ran into her (now renamed Peggy) with her new mum and dad at a show last weekend. They absolutely adore her and were thrilled when she came second in the Best Rescue class.
I think this picture says it all - I'm afraid I well up every time I look at it. Her dad looks so pround, and I'll swear Peggy also has a smug little smile on her face

(shame about the strange woman lurking in the background - but I was very proud of my little Sophie and her rosette too)
