I'm going to have a rant! My young dogs have brought back a virus from the show I went to on Saturday, and yesterday my old girl had a temperature of 105, and could hardly stand up - all due to a viral infection. She even refused chicken - and anyone who knows Harriet will know that she has NEVER refused food in her whole life! She is responding to antibiotics now, and has eaten today, but yesterday was very worrying.

Harriet didn't go to the show, but there is nowhere else that she could have caught it - she hasn't even been walked properly for a week because she'd been babysitting her daughter who's in season.

I know how tempting it is to go to a show when we've entered but if one dog is ill, please don't go! I nearly lost Harriet because someone HAD to go to a show when they had a sick dog!

OK. Rant over - you can come out from behind the sofa now!

I know of instances like this here, however sometime dog can be a carrier without actually having any symptoms. Also some viruses are airborn.

Best wishes for Harriet for a speedy and full recovery :luck: :luck: :luck:

A few years back we were benched next to 2 dogs who coughed and sneezed their way through the day..and hey presto..10 days later, 4 out of the 6 of mine had raging kennel cough..Its a very selfish and thoughtless thing to do and unfair and unkind to a dog who is probably not feeling its best.

Hope your dog feels better soon. xx

Poor Harriet I hope she is well again soon. It beggars belief that someone could take a dog to a show knowing it to be unwell and exposing every other dog, but then I am amazed that people can happily take in-season bitches anywhere near a show and have no consideration whatsoever for those showing dogs.

Get well soon Harriet

Jenny

Poor Harriet, get well soon! I know she would not skip her meals if she was not seriously sick!

:luck:

Thanks everyone.

Harriet is definitely on the mend now. Her temperature is back to normal, and her appetite has returned, though she is still a bit shaky. She is a very independant little person and gets really cross when I carry her up and down the stairs, but she can't manage them herself yet!

Glad Harriet is on the mend   - she must have felt really rough for the past few days. :huggles:

I think dog shows are a real hive of virus's and illnesses.I would say that about haf the shows we go to, for the following few days afterwards our youngest dogs have the runs. :( it does'nt seem to affect the adult dogs but rather seems to go the young ones.It makes me so mad as it is quite hard then to get the condition back on them and in a few instances they have not been able to go a show the following week as they have still been unwell.

I'm glad that Harriet seems to be over the worse and is now on the road to recovery

Oh Vannah how scary.

After reading that I'm feeling very thankful that my girls came home healthy from that show. We have some other issues we're dealing with (a new lump that needs to be removed), but no illness.

I'm so sorry to hear Harriet's not been well.

It may be a co-incidence but Woody (who was at the show on Saturday bright as a button) started vomiting last night and is really feeling quite poorly today. It is much more likely that he scavanged something yesterday which has upset him and once it passes through his system he will be fine but I am keeping a very close eye on him today.

I totally agree that "off colour" dogs should not go to shows - a couple of years ago mine caught kennel cough at a show which hit the oldie who had severe heart problems very badly. I lost the dog a couple of weeks later and I am convinced that the bout of kennel cough hastened his end.

Glad that Harriet is now eating again though. Give her a cuddle for me.

Gill

Glad Harriet is feeling a little better today. I too think its disgusting to take a poorly dog to a show just because you think you MIGHT win something, I hope I never get that desperate.

05Whippet, If my young dogs were coming home from half the shows with upset stomachs I would question weather it was a bug. Are they having a lot of treats at the show or different food?

I do tend to keep my dogs away a bit from other dogs at shows, that way I may not catch anything and wont pass anything on unknowingly either.

Poor Harriet, I do hope she is better and eating again. It is certainly very greedy of people to take sick dogs to shows, most unfair on other exhibitors.

I agree too with whats been said. Stan caught a nasal bug at 6 months at Manchester show, I think this possibly started the nasal problem for which he is now permanently on medication :(

Anyway, is it not possible though that theoretically your dog could have been ill and it had all cleared up and you then decided it was okay to bring to a show - but little did you know that the virus/bacteria is still contagious...? Therefore how long would people leave before bringing a dog to a show after it had been ill?

Glad to hear Harriet is on the bend Vanna :huggles: :huggles:

I think all our entry forms say six weeks - which seems rather excessive. I must admit that it's quite a while since actually read the declaration that I blythly sign every time I enter for a show, but that's certainly what it used to say.

Maybe that's her problem - she's been on a bender!

Ooops!!! :b Well seemed like it was quite a bender, to still be needing to be carried down the stairs!!!

Ummm I think it is quite sometime since I read the entry form too :b I'll check if I can find a schedule!

Just to say that I have had Woody at the vets as he started passing blood as well as still vomiting. His temperature is normal so it does seem more likely that he has scavanged something disgusting rather than picking up a virus at the show. He has had a couple of jabs, got a course of antibiotics and also a kaolin based gel to squirt down his throat! Should be fun as to get ANY form of tablet down him usually involves a wresting match. Hopefully he will be a lot better tomorrow.

Gill

Oh Gill, I hope he's all right.

Good luck with the gel. Gladly can keep it all in his mouth until after you think it's all gone down, and then spray it all over me and the furniture!!
