I also use Direct lne. When they whacked up the premium last year (when Polly was 5) I negotiated with them to exclude payment for kenneling if I were hospitalised, overseas insurance, advertising if lost and something else I've forgotten!! I also agreed a £130 excess, so my monthly premium is about £11. This is lifetime cover -it would be less with a ceiling on any illness.

It's worth asking if the premium can be reduced by removing any items you wouldn't need (like the kennelling if you are ill etc).

I'm going to look around when my policy comes up for renewal in April, but will probably stay put unless it is a huge hike in fees.
