Hey everyone....i recieved an e-mail from someone connected to the first minister of scotland concerning a mail i sent them about this. Here is what it said

Dear Ms McKendrick

Thank you for your Email of 12 December to Jack McConnell MSP, First Minister about the trade in dog and cat fur from China. Mr McConnell receives a large amount of correspondence every day and cannot answer all of it personally. The matter you have raised is the responsibility of the Department of Trade and Industry, and I have been asked to reply.

The Government shares your abhorrence about reports of cruelty to domestic cats and dogs in China. That is why the Government banned the farming of animals for fur in the UK in 2003 and has recently introduced the Animal Welfare Bill into Parliament.

The United Kingdom is at the forefront of international efforts to protect the interests of animals throughout the world and we take reports such as the one you refer to seriously. We welcome the work that non-governmental organisations, such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and the Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), undertake with the Chinese authorities to improve standards of animal welfare and to gradually build support for animal welfare issues there.

The Government has sought to establish the facts about the extent of the alleged trade in domestic cat and dog fur in the UK. So far, we have no corroborated evidence that such fur is entering the UK. But we are exploring possible ways of addressing this issue if domestic cat and dog fur is found to be on sale here. The Rt Hon Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, supported calls for the European Commission to investigate these allegations when the EU Agriculture Council met in May. The European Commission has hosted discussions between Chief Veterinary Officers of all the EU Member States at the request of the UK and others.

The Government's view is that action on this issue would be best taken at EU level, as a harmonised approach throughout the EU would have a greater impact. The Government remains committed to working with the Commission and other Member States to explore all practical options, including the possibility of a ban, to address this issue.

Hopefully this is a step in the right direction.
