We have recently spent 10 days in Somerset/Devon - very wet and windy, but still had a good time. We walked in the Quantock Hills and on Exmoor.

We often have a trip on a steam train.

We walked along the coast from Lynton and Lynmouth where there were goats grazing on the side of the cliff. They seemed very nimble (well I hope they are).

OH got fairly close to this one and said it smelled really bad.

Thanks Janice.

The adder was on the path and at first we weren't sure if it was alive. I carefully moved it (so it wouldn't get stepped on) using my walking pole to put it in the grass, and then it moved. (w00t) Do they sort of hibernate in the cold weather? I think that is the first time I have ever seen an adder in the wild. :)

There's lots of adders down this way (w00t)

Very dangerous if they bite a dog, as Di (gabbitas) will testify!

You must have been out on a day which was warm enough for it to come out and sunbathe - they need to do that in order to warm up and move properly. When it's cold they just stay curled up under a rock or such like I think.

I love the North Devon/Somerset coast and the road between Lynton and Porlock is amazing, isn't it!!

Yes, lots of Adders up this way too...they love basking in the sun till it warms them through

best time to spot them in sunshine......

I used to beat Grouse in my teenage days, and the lads used to think it funny to throw them off their beating sticks.... (w00t) used to scare me half to death

if you leave them alone they really wont do much harm, but if stepped on or approached too quickly..ie as dogs do...very nasty bites can occur

and some people have had very nasty reactions including death in very extreme cases.

What beautiful crisp pictures you've taken...can we see some more please :D

Lovely pictures, looks like you had a good time away :) Brave getting so close to the adder!

Thanks Nicola. It was really beautiful - I loved the Exmoor landscape, and even more dramatic in the rain with the dark skies.

We didn't take many photos as it rained so much  , and the dogs didn't get much free running because of the livestock, so not many pics of them either.

Here are a few more.

Sigh...I was down that way this time last year. I love all around that area from the Quantocks to Watchet, Minehead, Dunster, Selworthy, Porlock, Lynton and Lynmouth, and the views to the sea from Exmoor are fab.

Thanks for sharing these
