We are looking to add a Lurcher to the family..i am interested to see what some of them look like with the different breeds through them..i'd really appreciate seeing any pics of your dogs with a note about what cross/size he/she is? Thanks. :D

This was taken lunchtime today..Jaspa is Saluki/deerhound/greyhound...aged nearly 6. I guess he's officially a 'Longdog'

First go at posting photo, so might not work. If you can see Fly, she is mainly saluki and greyhound and is about ten years old and about 22" to the shoulder.

It'd probably be a little better if you said why you wanted a lurcher and what you expect from it.

Don't think i'm been funny it's just that with lurchers been a cross breed one litter of say whippet/bedlington x saluki/collie could look totally different from the next litter of the same breeding as it depends which way the particular litter throws.

Lurchers are bred to a job and hunt various quarry, it is that fact that should influence your choice irrelevent of what they look like.

Sorry, i should have explained what we are looking for - we are looking for a small sized Lurcher to live alongside our Vizslas and Terriers, i work one of the terriers on rabbit for local farms, maybe two or three times per month, or when they ask, i would like to use the Lurcher for this also..that's the only thing that i use the terrier for, other than the Gundogs picking up and doing general HPR work and beating. I only work p/t (10-12hrs) per week and have plenty of time, the dogs are walked between 2-4miles weekly and longer at week-ends. We have never owned a sighthound..only ever terriers and gundogs..i am just trying to understand and find out about the pros and cons of Lurchers before venturing any further. I have had mixed reports on a Beddy x Whippet as i have been told that they are VERY hunt orientated and going out on rabbit once in a while would not be enough. I am slightly concerned also having been told (by one person) that they can be difficult to control and can be difficult to have much recall with. I dont know much about the racing side, but once i learn more, would be keen to look at doing this also.

I guess the questions i would like answered are:

1)Would a Lurcher fit in with terriers/gundogs?

2)Can they be exercised off lead in areas where there may be deer/fox?

3)Can they live not being hunted every day?

I would greatly appreciate hearing any thoughts/opinions that anyone may have. The last thing i want to do is take on a breed that we dont understand. I have hankered after a Lurcher for many years now, but wouldnt do anything without fully looking into it.

The 'type' of Lurcher i had had in mind in like the one in this pic..although we do have the possible chance of a Parson Russell x Whippet..i know and understand the breeds we have onwed/do own now, but i keep being told that sighthounds are VERY different.

The main reason i was wanting to see what the different x's looked like is to try to be able to see what a collie x is like as compared to a Beddy x, bu ti fully see where you are coming from that each litter may be different. My PRT is a good little worked on rabbit, but she has a very poor coat and thin skin for a PRT, i would prefer a thicker coat in a Lurcher.

Perhaps don' t worry too much about size and coat of lurcher. A good starting point to think on might be that as a general rule, lurchers bred from mainly sighthound blood are of a more relaxed nature than those with say plenty of terrier or collie blood- those would require plenty of occupation.

I have seen someone local to me working terriers and lurchers together, bushing rabbits. It was very productive and impressive, but he had an amazing level of control over these dogs and I think he could be classed as an exceptional trainer.

Ask around plenty and see as much as you can- make your mind up that way- K9 is a great place to start.

Hi,

youve seen the pics of Amber(centre) (terrier x whippet), but heres the rest of my family. :)

Oscar (right) is the sandy/fawn rough hair (saluki/whippet/collie x saluki/greyhound/collie) 24", he is sooo well behaved

Dion (left) is Ambers son (whippet/terrier x greyhound/whippet/staffi) 22", lots of drive from his dads side

It's good to see someone putting so much into the needs of a specific dog before buying one. From what you've said I would say that a dog with a high percentage of sighthound, probably whippet blood would be ideal for your needs.

This seems to fit in with all the questions you had, however, you'd have to pay particular attention to getting the dogs recall spot on as by there very nature sighthounds do have a tendancy to want to chase anything that moves, it's up to you to control this.

Good luck with your choice and I hope you enjoy life as a lurcher owner.

Cheers

Friends of mine take their lurchers out beating without any problems, a couple of them also keep gundog breeds all live together ok. It usually relies on training & how much time & effort you put into them, as with all breeds :))

This is my 1st cross Beddie/whippet, he was the only 1 in the litter that was this colour/coat. The pic is him doing a gundog scurry, he does obedience comps & simulated coursing. He's a great rabbiting dog, his scruffy coat is great protection in brambles etc

As with most people & lurchers it's down to personal preference

What beautiful dogs, thank yo ufor sharing the pics with me. I see so many people through my work make bad decisions about the breed they take on, and this ends up being so unfair to the dog itself, who is the ultimate loser in the situation. I know now that what i would like is a Lurcher up to about 20" with a rough coat. Having trained terriers i cant imagine that a Lurcher will be too much more difficult (maybe easier!!) and i am really looking forward to find he/she in the near future...or however long it takes. Keep the pics coming though..all the dogs are just stunning. Thanks again. xx
