Does anyone out there have any idea what a dog owner would carry that, on being sprayed into someones face, initially felt like water but then started stinging like hell after 5 mins?

Any ideas gratefully received as my brother has just had this happen to him by an agitated lady with a dog screaming that a cyclist ran her dog over last week (he was on a shared cycle / footpath).

shit i hope hes ok, it could be anythink if it was pepper spray it would sting from the start i would av thought, keep washing the eye with cold water. on the issue of spraying its illegal to carry pepper spray i think but i know how to make it as i was getting worried bout my dogs getting attacked by roaming staffies. but in the end settled for steel toe boots and a stick

Hi lurcherman,

Thanks for replying. He's in A&E now. Sadly not the best time to go as the drunks are being wheeled in and might have a while to wait. He thinks it's something bleach based (that's what it smelt like) but no amount of washing out has really helped. He was a way from home when it happened, so couldn't wash it out immediately. He didn't realise it was anything but water for a while anyway and assumed the stinging was salt as he'd cycle a good few miles and was swetting a lot. No one expects a well dressed elderly lady to do something like this. He's still in shock...

I hope he's ok. My husband runs a mountain bike club, but fortunately most people are ok about where they ride. The most they find are people dragging branches across pathways. He's never faced anything like this. Any information would be good. Hopefully this is a one off situation and your brother makes a full recovery, without any lasting damage, and the women is made to realise how serious her actions were.

Thanks for replying jampot.

Thankfully he is fine. His eye is still a bit fuzzy but no permanent damage was found. We do not know what was squirted into his face but believe it to be fairly diluted bleach. The reason I posted on here is that I thought this liquid might be something dog walkers would carry. In retrospect I guess the liquid was nothing to do with dog walking at all.

He's still extremely grumpy about spending the night in A&E and being so scared not knowing what liquid he was dealing with. And still reeling under the shock that an elderly lady would behave in this loutish manner. He has reported the incident to the police, so hopefully she will be found and warned not to do it again.

keep us updated please. not saying for one minute you lad is a bad lad but theres lots who take the mickey out of oaps andits got that bad they feel vunerable so take measures like this, against the law yes for sure.

Wouldn't have a clue what it would have been, the only thing I carry when out walking Rocky is a can of compressed air which gets blasted in the air if another dog decides to get aggresive with Rocky, it's just a loud noise that acts as a distraction.

Hope your brother is OK and no permanent damage done, people should really think of the consequences of their action before using such things.

Just to let you know how this ended.

My brother appeared fine a few days after the encounter. However, his eye gradually became blurred and he is now awaiting an appointment with an eye specialist.

The police have dropped the case through lack of evidence. As far as we are aware they were unable to find the lady, and felt that if they put in the effort to do so it would probably not be worthwhile as it would have been a case of his word against hers in the absence of any witnesses.

I have no doubt that this lady had had a very nasty experience with a lycra lout on a bike. However, my brother is over 50 and of a size that makes lycra a distant dream. I am still really angry that she should have done this.

The only thing some dog owners carry is a can which is compressed air which is meant to sound like a goose, for controlling dogs who are a little unrulely (our border collie used to try to herd us by biting our shoes, the spray didn't work, but wearing sandles did as he doesn't want to hurt me). Some fizzy drinks sting quite badly though, i found out when a can exploded on me, still could feel it 2 hours later. Hope he's ok.
