Hi Folks. I am loking for a bit of advice.

Codie is losing his hair, and im not sure why.

It is not a massive problem, but i am a little concerned.

The worst bit is under his neck, I thought it may be his coller, but he only wears it when we go out.

It is also at the back of his legs, a little on his underside, and a small area at the side of his head near his ears.......

Someone mentioned something to do with central heating,,,,,

Please help if you can,am I being to lax,,, hope it is not serious, should I rush him to the vet....

If he's well in himself I wouldn't worry, as some Whippets seem to get thinner coats as they get older :) .........but if he's become quieter as hes got balder it may well be worth a trip to the vets to have his Thyoid function checked out (a simple blood test and a very easily managed problem) :luck: :luck: ......Hannah :)

I don't know much about boys but it can be hormonal with girls, callie once lost hair on her belly the vet said it was probably a skin mite that she'd picked up from the woods he gave her some special shampoo and she was fine although she's still not very hairy there  so it's probably just the way she is

Hope you get it sorted

You could give Codie some supplements too - evening Primrose oil is good for the coat or wheatgerm oil - all available from Dorwest herbs.

Hope you get Codie sorted out :huggles:

I have a blue whippet who started losing his fur, the vet told me that this colour dog does tend to lose fur, but if it was to get really bad then he would have to have some tests done, he's pretty bold on his neck, stomach and back legs but he's absolutely fine in himself.

I think many Blue whippets tend to have a thinner coat, and these tend to be the areas where the coat is thinner. Has this happened suddenly or gradually?

I'm not an expert by any means and I'm only adding what I have read and had a little bit of experience with. I'm sure there will be some helpful advice in addition to the above posts.

I would not "rush" Codie to the vet, but I certainly would take him fairly soon and ask your vet if he would take a blood sample for a thyroxine level test. Balding as you describe is a fairly classic symptom of hypothyroidism (under active thyroid gland)

There are other things which might indicate a thyroid problem... each thing in itself may sound minor, but when you start to add them all together, you can look at the whole picture.

Does he seek the warmer spots (radiator, fire) - has he put on weight - does he sometimes get a bit grumpy? is he less energetic than normal -

If the results come back normal but on the low side, you could consider supplementing with kelp seaweed - (available from Dorwest herbs especially for animals).

Kelp seaweek is known to stimulate the thyroid gland and I have known it help dogs coats regrow.

As someone else suggested, yuou could also supplement with Evening Primrose Oil .

Hope he gets sorted out..... sometimes it is best to try and stop things before they become a real problem.

Fingers and paws crossed !

The coat problem some times found in blue pigmented dogs is called colour dilution alopecia. Do a Google search for that, and I am sure you will find some information that will help you find out if your dog might be affected by it.

Hi Gav

Just to make you feel better Byron is exactly the same on his flanks and neck, I think it is due him lying down and his collar (respectively) plus he lives in a centrally heated house. (I know with dogs I have had that lived in outdoor kennels had really thick coats??)

He is perfectly well in himself, in fact as mad as a hatter!! Weight is fine as is everything else.

It could be a genetic, seasonal or blue whippet thing?? But if you are worried just pop him along to the vets, if not he can come and live here with his brother and sister!!

(Mind you Macey is thining between her ears and eyes too and she is fine as well.........)

Linda and the Gang

Eli (fawn, not blue), has gradually got thinner in these areas (he's now 5), our vet doesn't seem to think it's anything to worry about, and to be honest nor do I. If you're really concerned tho' a quick check with the vet wouldn't hurt. (And yes, just as annlouise says, the bits near the ears are especially nice for kissing :* :p !)

I once had a black whippet who at certain times of the year went 'pink 'on his neck head and thighs then a few weeks later the hair grew back. one time was usually the end of the year another time was beginning of the summer

Merlin was bred of a blue bitch and a black dog

This is Robbie about 6 weeks after he won his 2nd Rch Title last year. He is a bit bald on his head and neck.

Nothing to worry about unless he is quiet or off his food

Robbie and I hope the photo is not too big (w00t)

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

and all the best in 2006

Lot of Whippets and greyhounds are like that. It is lot more visible on the blue and blacks. We were woried about Nina, Bessie's black daughter who lives with my friends. I have only just noticed that Bess also has hair thinner in the same places, but as she is particolour, she is white on her backside, neck etc. and it is only apparent when you look very closely.

Nina had all the relevant tests and her thyroid is perfect.
