While out on a walk yesterday,Izzy was zooming around a field with the others, but when she came back,i noticed blood on her hind foot.On further inspection,i saw she's managed to completely lose a whole toe nail (w00t)

I was amazed that she didn't seem too bothered about it cos it looked awful, just a hole where the nail had been ripped right out :( It makes me squirm just thinking about it :sweating:

I'm pleased to say that it doesn't look too bad today,i've been bathing it in salt water,& giving her arnica,so fingers crossed it heals quickly!

I don't know Lesley,don't think there's anything to grow back! :(

Ouch! That looks sore. Interesting that she's not lame on it. I hate anything to do with nails.

Poor Izzy.

Ouch, poor Izzy. I once lost my thumb nail. It did grow back quite quickly. Give her a :huggles:

Callie still has one of her dew claws and it is only small but has come off twice, no blood or pain just come off (w00t) but it keeps growing back so the root must be there but I don't know how it doesn't hurt her when it does come off

I thought she'd be very lame on it,but i think because there's no nail touching the ground,it can't be as bad as a damaged nail.

She's being a bit more careful than usual today, but still managed to have a run round the garden

Strangely, ripping a complete nail out doesn't seem to bother them in the slightest!

It has happened to several of mine, most seem to grow back OK but Coco has done it 3 times, once on a front toe and only a stump has grown back there, the other one on the same outside toe on a hind foot (caught it jumping over a puppy panel). Obviously it grew back the first time, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to rip it out again but oddly it did not bleed hardly the 2nd time. I think if they do grow back the quick does not grow right to the end (which is what bleeds). The one Dante ripped out on his front paw grew back to look perfectly normal but has no quick as I can cut it right back.

What I hate is when they have the nail hanging by a thread and it needs pulling off! :x (w00t)

Aaahh bless her. Hope she recovers quickly.

Useful tip for anything like that is Friars Balsam, you can buy it from the chemist, dab it on with a cotton bud, not only seals the wound but stops any infection getting in to it, very old remedy but i use it when i take off my puppies dew claws & its excellent, heals within 24 hours.

A spaniel we had years ago did this. It bled lots but healed quickly. Never grew back though! Hope Izzy is better soon.

Yep we use that too, great stuff

At least it does'nt seem to bother Izzy if that pic you posted is anything to go by Debs,I have a feeling it has affected you more than her (w00t)

Hope it grows back, lots of hugs to her in the meantime :huggles:

Aw poor Izzie :huggles: hope she heals quickly.

My very first whippet did something similar and ended up having an op to remove the other part of the toenail :( she always looked like she had half a toe ...

Izzie hugs :huggles: for a speedy recovery. :luck:

Poor Izzy. She doesn't look the slightest bit bothered by her injury . Hope it heals soon. :huggles:

Mia sends all her love to Izzy - and says anything Izzy can do, Mia can do better - she has done exactly the same today!!! She isn't lame on it, but isn't too happy about me bathing it. I am going to try the Friars Balsam treatment now, thanks for the tip Nina, I only ever use it when I have a head cold normally!!

Get well soon Izzy, lots of love from the jools gang. :luck: :huggles: :luck:
