Things didn't go very well yesterday when I got home from work :(

We went off down the field and Jinny had found a pig's ear (probably one she had hidden before) and she was teasing Ella with it ...... running up and putting it down in front of her, daring her to try and take it

When we got back to the yard, I was fetching something from the shed and I heard loud growly, scrapping noises followed by a real yelping scream (w00t)

I rushed out to see Jinny cowering on the ground with Ella very close to her and Rio, the black/tan GSD about 5 yards away  Jinny had been caught on top of her back, right on top of her shoulder blades, by someone's tooth?????

The tooth had sliced a cut of about 1cm which opened up to the base dermal layer but did not actually bleed. The problem was the movement of her shoulders and I decided that it would probably need a couple of stitches to hold it together whilst it was healing.

After I had cleaned it up, it had opened to quite a gash - although still no blood. So off we went to the vet (luckily it was only 5pm). He agreed she needed stitching so we travelled on to the main clinic to meet the vet there, as they are not geared up for surgical stuff at the local branch :(

Of course, poor Jinny doesn't travel and, once again, she was puking everywhere and drooling all over me :x :x

She didn't enjoy the local anaesthetic needle - very painful :( and wriggled like mad each time Mark (vet) was stitching :(

And then we had to travel home again ....... more puke :x :x :x :(

Ella was with us all the time and was a model whippie - the perfect puppy (w00t)

Jinny is fine in herself now, having slept right through from 7pm last night but I am at a loss to know whose tooth caused the damage? And the vet wasn't able to tell either.

Was is Ella when they were play-fighting, which they do alot of and it gets quite violent (w00t)

Or was it Rio, who has a recent history of attacking Abi (white GSD) by biting her face and drawing blood (Abi looks like a pit bull at the moment)

I just don't know and I don't want to automatically blame Rio as there as no other marks on Jinny and I just feel that if it had been Rio then it would have been a real, proper bite and not a deep scratch ...... plus the fact that Rio wasn't really near enough either.

I'm hoping it was just puppy play which got a bit rough - has anyone else experienced this??

Oh poor Jinny! :huggles: :huggles:

I've had similar situations where the dominant dog decided they were going to have the treat and duffed up poor unsuspecting less dominant anybody to get it! It's not a real fight as such but does leave wounds on the victim, :( usually minor thankfully. :sweating: I just have to be careful who has what and try and make sure that the underdogs are protected.

All of which leads me to believe that it was puppy play that suddenly got serious. I would suggest taking the pig's ear away next time or making sure the others have one too. Dogs take such competition very seriously. :)

:( oh dear :( not nice, is it. weve had some humdingers in our house, what with having 4 dogs. sounds wrong, but i'd bet on the one with previous, though another may have instigated it. amber and dante both have numerous scars on their faces, and all because of purdey  every fight weve had, shes been involved. if you know whos likely to be the catalyst, you'll have to ensure theres no chance for that one to wind up the others (purdey starts on dante, then he jumps at her, so their mum, amber, jumps at dante for starting on her baby, as purdey is 1 1/2 younger than dante, so then of course amber and dante go at it hammer and tongs) needless to say, purdey has to be supervised ALOT

Mmmmm, Jinny is the wind-up merchant here. She has to have ALL the pies and will take them from Ella because she can! Ella does fight back but, being younger, is the underdog at present and, of course, she still has those oh so sharp puppy teeth (w00t) Strangely enough Jinny will let Ella eat her food without any concern at all - probably because Jinny has never been keen on eating

poor jinny , hope she is feeling better soon :huggles:

i would put my money on the gsd though

1 because ella is smaller than jinny and you would imagine she would bite round her neck or face as whippets do

2 because she still has her puppy teeth she is unlikely have been able to cause so much damage

you will never know and as long as jinny is ok thats the main thing

Oh no poor Jinny :( give her a hug from me :huggles:

being a spawn of Owen  my immediate suspicions would have been Ella, if she was bigger and older

but as she is still young and little, it does sound like it might be the bigger dog o:)

:* becka

Most deffo 'daughter of Owen' :teehee:

:huggles: :huggles: xx

I toowould say one of the bigger dogs Ella is probably still to small to doany serious damage.

Does she seem to be a bit wary of either of them? giving them a wide berth or a bit suspicios of either of them?

I think it is a case of watch and look for any tell tale signs that may show who it was.

Oh Jane, poor Jinny :( I think she must have read that Solly has a very similar injury at the moment and decided that it was a good ploy to get lots of special treatment :- " Poor little girl, it is so horrible when you see them hurt, Solly sends lots of licks and :huggles: for her and hopes she is feeling better very, very soon.

My large dog may be the culprit for some of the injuries that Solly has had to go to the vets for, I can not be sure. It is difficult when you are not there isn't it. I would say that if mine had one ear between them, I think Solly would get bitten! I have to monitor them if they have something nice.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind comments and sympathies :huggles:

Jinny has been totally normal today and is not in the least bit phased by Rio or Ella. The only thing which I am having to be careful about is not touching her round her shoulders as she is very sore :(

No sign of any aggression today so I think it was probably a one off accident whoever did it

One thing I have noticed is that the girls do try to bring each other down by launching and grabbing the scruffs of their necks and, as Ella can reach Jinny's scruff, it may be possible that she launched and just missed and her canine did the damage on the way down as they were running??

But as saraquele said, I'll never know and at least Jinny is absolutely fine :D
