My boy, Josh, did the same thing at the end of June and he ended up having a steroid injection into the toe and 2 lots of x-rays. I put him on greenleaf tablets and he was sound after a week. Now I don't know if that was a delayed reaction to the steroid or the tablets but I would definitely recommend the greenleaf. My vet is not great with 'running dogs' so maybe the steroid injection was unnecessary. But at the moment he is sound but I'm continuing the greenleaf to be on the safe side.

Hi thanks for all the advice

I have phoned the hydrotherapy centre in Cheltenham and have been advised to get a referal from the vet for her to do this, I can put it on the insurance then.

I dont think my vet is a running dog specialist but he is very good with my dogs, as she is in no pain & not lame he just advised me to not let her run as that type of injury just takes time to heal. Obviously I want to do what is best for her and anything that aids her recovery is welcome, her food contains gucosimine (sp) and green muscle extract which is good for joints and muscles.

In her self she is fine just wondering why she cant go and play in the garden with Morrissey and getting fed up with me when I put them in one room to stop them doing show jumping round the house, its the build up of energy I need to deal with without putting any stress on her toe

Hi Barbara

Where is coalpit heath is it far from Gloucester

Hi Janet

What is Greenleaf and where could I get it?

Cor blimey thats a bit much typing I think I'm getting an RSA

Cheers

Lou

I just phoned the vet re. a referal and he has told me not to take her to hydrotherapy as it would not help at all, just to keep her rested

Aw, what a cute pic of Daisy  She does look very sad :( I hope she's feeling better soon. It's surprising how they adapt to lead walking. Josie is on week 6 now, and she's very good about it. I did let her off last week in a churchyard and she had a mad five minutes bombing about amid the gravestones, but otherwise she just pads along with me. I've got a 1.8m lead which helps because she can drift off for some extra sniffing.

I think the hydrotherapy might have been suggested to burn off energy rather than help the toe... in which case, your insurance might not cover it anyway as it might noy count as therapy

When I spoke to the vet and hydrotherapy lady I did say it was only for extra exercise. The hydro lady wanted a referal and vet said no it wasnt suitable it would be the same as walking her

Coalpit Heath is between Bristol (where I thought that you live  sorry about that) and Yate.

Dunno why I thought that you lived in the Bristol area.

Oh dear!   :(    Poor Daisy   :huggles:   I would get her onto Glucosamine as quick as you can!!

How much would you recommend? I'll get some tomorrow

Shes not lame or anything just deformed (w00t) and very soon shes gonna be fit to burst

I would get the Healthspan Glucosamine & Chondroitin + MSM & Vit C tablets (pot of 180 tablets) and give 2 tablets twice daily as a loading dose for 4/6 weeks then reduce to 2 tablets once daily as a maintenance dose, which could be straight Glucosamine 750/800 mg daily which would be more than enough for a whippet bitch.

Healthspan

It is a build-up effect so you need to continue for maybe 6 months or more if she is still not right. It will have no adverse effects anyway but will help maintain healthy joints & soft tissue like ligaments/tendons

So i have to say this im from YATE! (w00t)

Oh yes and i hope that daisy gets batter very soon.

 well the place that I take my whippets to to swim them is just down the road from you.

Hi Lou, Greenleaf tablets are made by Denes and they are a herbal tablet containing nettles. Don't be put off by the label which says they are good for arthritis, kidneys, skins complaints. I bought my in the local pet shot - 100 for £5.99. I was recommended to them by the breeder of 2 of mine and she has used them successfully as well. Hope this helps and she gets better soon. I think the resting thing is the best way but I couldn't stop mine running around indoors or garden with the others and he absolutely hated walking on the lead whilst the others were running, but if I tried to leave him at home he was hysterical, jumping up on the draining board trying to escape out of a closed kitchen window! Good luck :))
