Both my dogs have now come down with a type of enteritis. Could i ask all owners( not blaming everyone-just the irresponsible) to keep away from the tracks for a couple of weeks if their dogs have been ill, it's the only way to reduce contagion. Evie came down first and now Ruby. I am now forced to stay away from racing for a couple of weeks all due to some ar****le who wouldn't let their dogs stay away. I know it's going around but why help it spread?

a will 2nd this Gordon,we haven't had any racing for months we have waited for the straights been getting our dogs ready, and then the person who's carrying the bug comes along and spreads it to the clean dogs.. if i dog is carrying the bug and goes in a trap and we follow it and bingo we off for a week or 2.as Gordon says STAY AWAY!!!

this must be a wide spread bug as my son paul has been no where near tracks for weeks yet oscar and jasper came down with the bug last wednesday, they went off food for 3 days and had sickness, he stayed away from mine with me having pups in and mine have been fine, so you dont need to be at track to get it  just be careful with dogsin parks ect.........

AGREE WITH YOU GORDON THATS WHY I PRASED JOHN AND PAT FOR NOT BRINGING THEMSELVES OR CANDYMILL AND TINKERSMILL WHO WAS BOUNCING TO THE CHAMPS .THIS BUG SEEMS TO LAST TWO TO THREE DAYS BUT IT STILL TAKES YOUR DOG 2 TO 3 WEEKS TO FULLY RECOVER.YOU MUSNT BRING THEM BACK TOO SOON OR BE DISSAPOINTED WITH THERE EARLY PERFORMANCES.LETS HOPE IT CLEARS UP SOON.

might be a good idea for the clubs and organisations to get the VIRKON buckets/mats out again

Like Debbie said, an infection can be picked up anywhere. It depends on how the infection is passed but most enteritis bugs are spread through faeces.

However anyone thinking their dog is well following a bug should give them a period of recovery regardless this is to prevent a relapse, opportunistic secondary infections attacking and because poor performance is likely.

There may be some merit in supplementing dogs with pro-biotics (yoghurt drinks and such) whether they have been ill or not. Those dogs that have required antibiotic treatment would particularly benefit from it.

People with pups below 2 weeks old should stay away from anywhere were exposure is likely. Anyone who has lost a pup /pups and suspects their premises are infected would do well to approach their vet for serum ''vaccination'' from a recovered dog or a recently boostered one. Common sense applies for other puppy owners, keep outside clothing and footwear away from the whelping room and wash before handling your pups. A good excuse to stay in your pyjamas all day!

I took four of mine to Crewkerne Show last weekend.

Two of them have severe vomiting and one of them has had liquid diahorrea for 2 days (he is now recovered).

They certainly didn't eat anything whilst they were there so I can only assume the virus is infectious or, possibly, contagious

I am now waiting for it to spread around the rest of my, currently, healthy whippets :(

LOTS OF GOOD ADVICE THERE JAQUI ONE MORE THING TO ADD DONT WORRY SO MUCH ABOUT THEM EATING FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS BUT MUST KEEP THEM REALLY HYDRATED EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO KEEP SQUIRTING WATER DOWN THERE THROAT.

Sun Prince was off colour a few weeks back didnt eat for a couple of days but had no sickness or shits talking to greyhound people with kennels its been all over the place thats why i kept away for a few weeks
