Merry Christmas everyone, I've only posted once before, so am very new to this. I have a beautiful 7 yr old girl, who is not very well, and I can't get to the vets until tomorrow. On thursday gone, she seemed off her food, and was sleeping quite a lot. She is such a greedy girl where food is concerned which makes this so unusual, not even interested in her usual treats.

She has had hardly anything to eat all over Christmas. She doesn't appear to be in pain, no runny eyes, her nose is cold and wet, not being sick or problem with her bowels, but the lack of food is making her very weak, I am so worried, I can't wait to get to the vets tomorrow.

We took her for a little walk this afternoon and told a friend and they said that there was a virus going around and it sounded similar, anyone heard of this.

Hope she picks up soon. Is there not an emergency vet available in your area?

Our little Alfie was off his food last thursday and was looking quite down in the dumps , then later on in the day he vomited a couple of times so we took him to the vets , they gave him a anti sickness injection and a vitimin b12 injection , he was alot more perky by the time he was back home . Hope your girl is soon feeling alot better in herself

Been to vets, scan showed enlarged spleen, blood tests were pretty good, not showing anything really, she had high temp and was dehydrated so he gave her and antibiotic, and need to see him tomorrow. She has eaten a little, more than yesterday, but still sleepy, think maybe slightly better but still ill. Thanks for your concern, will update. (when I get used to doing this!)

Been to vets, seems she has enlarged spleen, going back tomorrow to see if temp has lowered, she is very comfortable, but mum is worried.

Hope she is on the mend. Let us know about her progress. :luck:

Glad to hear that your whippie is improving. Keep us posted :luck:

Been to vets again today, thurs, she is no worse, but temp had only dropped by 1 degree, so he has given her a stronger antibiotic, and a B12, when I asked him what he was treating her for first, he said lets go for an acute infection because of the enlarged spleen. She has had a little to eat and drink, meaning she went to her feeding bowl herself and mum gave her several biscuits, via a cup of tea! Got an appt tomorrow, so we will go from there. Thanks for your messages, I will up date.

Hope the anti bs kick in soon , sounds like she is improving which is the main thing .

When my dogs are off their food or ill, I cook for them some chicken fillet (without any skin or fat) with rice and pumpkin. If needed quickly I just boil the medium grain rice & pumpkin until very soft and there is not much liquid left, then throw in finally chopped chicken and boil enough for the meat to be cooked. Let cool and add bit of good probiotic yogurt.

If somebody is ill for a long time, I get some drumsticks and boil them until all the meat falls of and the bones release all the flavour; then I strain & skim it, and use this stock to cook the medium grain rice with chicken fillets and pumpkin (the nice sweet one). My dogs love this and it also settles their tummy if they had the runs or were vomiting. i also use this as first food for my pups.

hope she will be back to normal soon :)

hows the poorly whippet any news?
Thanks to all for your concern, seems the computer has been on holiday so couldn't reply, but I think my poorly whippet is on the mend.

After lots of anit-biotics and good vet care we seem to be getting back to normal, yesterday her temp was 101.1 which was good and her spleen had reduced significantly. It has been a scary time for us but it has been much more sad for poor Molly.

The vet has been treating her for an acute infection, and I am assured that has been the problem. He asked me if she had been in the West Country, or had she eaten snails or slugs, could only say no, so not sure what the infection has been, just to make sure, he gave me 5 more days of anti-biotics and signed me off unless I need him.

Must say I have spoiled her with lots of chicken, (even lots of sleeps on our bed) and healthy treats to encourage her and it seems to be paying off, thanks again to all who have been concerned and for your advice on food etc , All the Best for a Happy New Year!
