This is a topic that has long fascinated me. I have been "advised" by the learned here that ALL whips are born with the required insincts to make a working dog. While, for the sake of peace, I will take his on board ;) , obviously some are far better than others. What I find curious is the ability of some dogs to stamp their progeny. This is not restricted to dogs. Many champion Thoroughbred sires have siblings or 3/4 bred relatives that fail the progeny test. Often the performance of the individuals is comparable, till they hit the breeding barn.

There are some well known lines of whippet that have continually produced an abnormal number of outstanding workers. Often these dogs have been placed in mixed kennels, with all pups receiving the same basics, yet certain bloodlines and parentage continue to out perform others in the field, regardless of training, nurturing or patience.

While I have no vested interest in any particular line, I will freely admit my preferances, to proven working lines, if you wish to pursue a working situation. Good dogs can come from anywhere, but I find it amazing the influence one dog(or bitch) can have in this regard, with a consistant passing of outstanding genetic attributes,

cheers

I'm really not sure that Bluebell has been born with the required instincts...She's 12 months now and only ever chased house flies, moths and a few birds.

I am pleased though with this as most of the rabbits on our walks live under the railway line.

I have never encouraged her to hunt, although have shown her a few bunnies, but she's usually way to interested in droppings to spot the actual rabbits.

My Border Collie has always chased rabbits...but when he catches them he comes back to me and drops them at my feet...not as a corpse, but live, screaming totally unharmed...and he then asks me to throw them...then looks hurt as they've run off home by then
