HELP! We bought our puppy from a lady who had only had puppy for less than 1 week and decided it wasn't for her or her family. We exchanged several messages and arranged to meet half way for me to collect puppy (she lived in Kent and me in the midlands). I paid her £2000 which is what she had paid for puppy. The following day she messaged to ask if we would consider returning the puppy - I politely said no. Since then she has sent messages saying that I had harassed her into selling me the puppy and her children are heartbroken and that I am a selfish brat for not letting them have puppy back. She is now disputing the transfer with the microchip company saying she wants the puppy back and that I harassed her into selling him! The microchip company have said as she is currently the registered owner if she disputes the transfer there is nothing that they can do???? I have sent them copies of the messages and bank transfer to prove she willingly sold us the puppy - again they are saying legally they cannot change the chip details - anyone offer any further advice on this?

One of the big flaws in our current microchipping system is that whoever is registered with the chip owns the chip not the dog. In this case it works in your favour.
I would strongly recommend you contact one of the solicitors such as Trevor Cooper, who specialise in dog law.
Meanwhile, keep copies of all correspondence. She's chancing, because if you paid the money you own the pup.

As above. It is sad in some ways but the law treats pets as property in the same way as a car or TV set. If you do need to contact Trevor Cooper, the company is www.doglaw.co.uk

Not a great way to buy a puppy- always best to deal with reputable people who care about dogs first and foremost. BUT this is now. If the person has your money and you have the puppy and want to keep it, you're under no obligation to engage with her. Certainly find out how to proceed legally re the chip, which you will need to change. But every text, screen shot, message to/from this person will strengthen your hand. Also this woman doesn't sound like a good long term proposition for the puppy- who knows in a month's time she could be sick of it again? If it were me I'd move heaven and earth not to let her get her hands on it again. Good luck.

Hmm...I am surprised that they cannot change the details as I have done it in past as the owner of the dog had passed away and the family gave the dog for us. As the registered owner wasn't around to change the ownership, I was still able to follow the chip company's on line links to do it myself...but I did know the chip number to do it. I don't know if there has been recent changes to these things or if it depends of the company who's chip it is and their policies??
If you previous owner is till carrying on....I would suggest replying that it is in best interest of the dog that she does not carry on with this as you will involve RSPCA as her brief ownership and willingness of disturbing pup's development with attempts of constant change of homes is reportable....you know where she lives can be hinted too..
Who knows....little bit threat might work wonders and show that you are not push over...sometimes that is all what is needed to deal with bullies....particularly these types as to me it shouts that there is something iffy going on...money to be made.
Btw...how old is this pup? Do you know the original breeder? Could this pup been passed for different hands more than twice already?

Yes - It was all legit. She had the puppy from a breeder in Wakefield and sent me images of the documents - it was purchased from the breeder from an advert for Pets4homes and I contacted them to advise that we now had the puppy. They had pnly had the puppy for a couple of days before she decided to sell him. I have the chip number but to transfer they need her permission and she has disputed it - Smart Breeder are saying that there is nothing that they can do other than make a note that the chip transfer is in dispute!
She wont be getting him back! He is part of our family now!

You didn't happen to find out what she paid for the pup from the breeder. Alot are selling pups on straightaway just to make a fast buck.

I have mentioned before that the RSPCA is a charity not a law enforcement agency, and has NO legal powers except those of the ordinary citizen. So it's no use to involve them and just adds another level of interference.
However, something about this stinks. A week/few days is not long enough to change chip details, so the pup very probably is still registered to the breeder. Or the breeder is something to do with the woman you bought the pup from.

No - i have checked. The chip was changed from the breeder to the lady i bought puppy from she registered him the day she collected him and then changed her mind the following day - it took about a week for us to meet to collect puppy
