Hi all,

well the problem with Binx started on the 5 of November, he HATED the fireworks, and shook from head to toe and also vomited :x and whinged all night :( (I had a radio on and the light for him)

since that night he's become this very nervous, jumpy little dog at ANYTHING!!

the kids slam the door he's cowering and shaking, everytime I shout up stairs to the kids or hubby for something he's shaking and all nervous, I've been tip-toeing around him for ages, (which is hard work with 4 kids)

then the fireworks on new years, he's even more sensative to noise, if a car door slams outside (rubbish windows) he shakes, if someone knocks the door hard, he cowers, if one of the kids drops something he runs to his bed and shakes  if the neighbour chops wood he's spooked.

I want my little bouncy, confident Binx back, how do I do this? tip-toeing around him and trying to be quiet doesn't help, I've tryed talking to him quietly and stroking him but he's just a total wreck :(

it's getting me down as he was such a little charactor before now he's just this trembling nervous boy who's scared of every noise.

plz help!

Also since this night he's started to growl at Indi (toy yorkie) for no reason, this has happened about 6 to 8 times :(

Poor Binx and poor you :(

I've never had a dog become nervous, but I can see how the fireworks could cause it - ours were very jumpy by New Years Day, however I have two rescues that turned up as nervous wrecks.

Josephine in particular cowered at everything. She is still a bit nervous with strangers, but in every other way a different dog. What we did was laugh and talk really cheerfully whenever she started to shake and give her a big firm confident hug if she was particularly bad. I think if she realises that we aren't worried and the other dogs aren't worried she relaxes.

It took me about 2 months to teach her to play, but now she's got the idea when ever she gets tense about something we have a wild game and she forgets about it. She particularly like bouncing on her front legs so I get down on the ground and bounce with her.

I hope this helps a bit.

Good luck :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Some people I know have used Melatonin with great success for firework phobia.

Thanks for the replies, just had a very helpful chat with Alfyn (Deb) thanks :huggles:

I will put all I have been told to use and hopefully sort little scared Binx out,

anyone know why he's started to growl at Indi?? will this be down to his nervous state also?

Tina - I would suggest that the growling at your toy yorkie is just due to him feeling so unsettled and nervous at the moment particularly as he didn't growl before. Poor little chap - he must have been terrified of the fireworks (B****y things) - I live right out in the countryside and so we are quite lucky that we get very few fireworks going off but a couple of nights after Xmas at about 9 p.m. the property down the land let off some very loud fireworks which screeched and banged something awful - he frightened the life out of both myself and my hubby as the noise was so tremendous and without warning and our collie dog who was alseep in the chair in another room almost came through the shut door in her haste to reach us. Our lurcher puppy was also frightened and wouldn't settle to sleep that night until eventually we let him sleep on our bed! Our other dog the pointer cross was the least bothered but the noise also upset him and my poor young horse (who fortunately was stabled) was also frightened to death as he could also see the colours leaping up into the sky as well as having to deal with the very loud bangs and cracks. I do sympathise with you and your poor little chap - I hope you overcome the problem quickly and that he is soon restored to his happy bouncy confident self. Best wishes.

Poor Bynx, hope he's gets over it soon :luck:

I knew debs would be able to help  I hope you get it all sorted soon Tina good luck to you and Binx :luck: :luck:

Just wanted to say - Good Luck with Binx ... poor little man - hope he gets over it all soon. :luck:

Just wanted to give everyone an update on how Binx is doing, I think were getting there!! HURRAY!!

he's still nervous about loud noises he hears outside (next door neighbour chopping wood, etc) but indoors I can now be a bit more relaxed around him and not tip-toe everywhere :D (I've been ignoring him if he starts to shake and whimper)

out for walks he's still nervous but is getting better everyday, I think he likes the comfort of his new coat  he still freaks at a car horn and a car door slamming, but he's coming around slowly, hopefully I'll get my bashful Binx back very soon

I'm dreading november 5th though, I hope this doesn't take him back to square one again :(

Thnaks for all the advise everyone! :huggles:

our vet sells a CD with loud noises on, they recon it gets them used to it?.

yeah I've heard about that, but I've also been advised that too much stress can kill (overlode of toxins in the kidneys),

so I'm doing the gently, gently approch, it seems to be working though and ignoring him when he reacts to loud noises also
