I wonder if you could give me the benefit of your opinions please? I have a rescue lurcher..he's a whippet/greyhoundx (we think!), came from Ireland six months ago. He is a lovely boy in the house, and good with my two pomeranian bitches, but outside, he's awful when he sees other dogs. Some make him worse than others, sometimes he just whinges a bit, others he really squeals and yells, whirls round, generally acts like an idiot. We have seen a behaviourist, she says its lead aggression, and we are working on it. The other day he was attacked by on offlead muzzled patterdale terrier, which hasn't improved matters. The point of the post (yes, there is one!) is that I'd like to go to the Pride of the Peaks show on Sunday.....but, do we take him too? I think the fact there will be loads and loads of dogs will stun him into silence......my husband is of the opinion it'll give him a nervous breakdown! I know years ago, we had a dobe bitch who tried to chase motor bikes, we took her to a racing meeting, walked her round the paddock with literally hundreds of bikes, and it cured her.....there were just so many, she didn't know which one to chase. I'm thinking lots of dogs might do the same for him, what do you all think??

If the person who runs the class is a very good trainer Id say it would help the dog enormously.

I started my very first class last night with Kobi my youngest dog. There was quite a lot of different breeds of dogs, ranging from sheepdogs, labradors, retrievers and even a Great Dane (w00t)

Any signs of any trouble and our Trainer would get the dog into a relaxed position, and things immediately calmed down. Also there was a quite aggressive sheepdog who was muzzled most the the evening, but all in all I thought this a great social evening for the dogs.

I learned an aweful lot I must say and have now realised just how much the dogs benefit from this type of social training.

You could always take him along and see just how he reacts and get some advice from the Class Trainer, after explaining what the dog is like. I found the guy that runs ours was very helpful and has been in dog training for a lot of years so very experienced. Good Luck. :luck:

oops sorry! didn't make it clear....I'm not talking about taking him to a class, I'm talking about a country show type thingy......there is lurcher racing, ferret racing, harness racing for horses, shires, show jumping, birds of prey, the lot! there is a fun dog show.....but also qualifiers for lurchers and things. Never been before, it sounds like it should be good..........but would it be good for him??? thanks for your thoughts anyway, I appreciate it....did try him at a class, the trainer didn't want him because she said he would upset the other dogs by making a noise!

Sorry suzeanne,

misread somehwere - If you are taking a car I suppose he could go along and if he found everything a bit too much you could always retreat to the car - or find a quiet part away from everything.

He might panic when he gets there - I personally would have slowly built up to something as big as this because your OH' may be right - he just might freak out, and if he does escape from his lead - no telling where hed end up.

But if you think you could handle it ok - well go for it. Poor lad - it might be worth taking him along to some classes first to socialise him or walk out wirth a friend and other dogs.

I see you were turned away from one class - our Trainer wouldnt turn a dog away - he seems to be able to handle all sorts.

Maybe try another one. :luck:

our lurcher talula get excitd on lead jumps about and hawels at other dogs its not lead agression she just once to play and get over excited when she carnt get to anither dog and play she is a lot better now than she was but we take her to conry fairs and places were there are loeads of dogs after a coupel of mintes she gives up howling and is fine all the time we are there no problem. We have allso found that now she does a bit of lurcher racing she is loosing interset in other dogs cos she would rather chase the lure instead.

we call talula an opra hound cos she is very vocal not barking but she hwels wined clacks her theet when she wonts to play its just her shes a chatty dog.
