My 20 week Labradoodle is itching and biting her fur off her legs. She hasn't got fleas. Could anyone recommend anything I could put on. I have changed her food for about a week now. Any suggestions?

All sorts of things cause a dog to itch. They can be allergic to almost anything. As she is fairly new to your house I would suggest a check up at the vet's.

Harvest mites, sarcoptic mange mites, demodectic mange mites, house dust mites, the list of mites is endless. Then there are dietary allergies, environmental allergies etc etc.

If she is not insured then it might be politic to insure her first. If you go to the vet first then, if it turns out to be a long term condition the insurance company may not cover it.

You say she does not have fleas. Is this because she has been treated with a veterinary prescribed flea treatment? Or is it because you cannot see any fleas? Some dogs are so sensitive that one flea bite will set them off. The pet shop flea treatments just do not work I am afraid.

Most vets treat itchy skin internally with drugs. In the case of some of the mites they may prescribe a specialist shampoo.

Stress can also cause dogs to attack themselves.
