I don't believe they are bred once a year .I think they will be bred from every time they come in season .

Wonder what happens to all the unwanted Mums ?
Whenever I look at Many Tears Rescue in Wales I feel so sad as they always seem to have a lot of bitches for rehoming that have come from puppy farms (I assume). Most won't have been socialised or house trained. The outside world must be such a scary place for them. I wonder how many poor bitches just get PTS at the end of their breeding days and never get to experience a loving home.

There are a couple of facebook groups related to Irish puppy farming people might like to have a look at

I knew this went on, but I am totally shocked by the scale of it and the numbers quoted

Going back to the original TV clip, the really scary thing is that these are the ones that are willing to have their premises filmed. Can you imagine the conditions in the ones where no one is allowed to go? :(

i used to think people werent educated about these places and that if they were they wouldnt buy from them but now i dont think that.i think they dont give a toss where the dogs come from or how bad the conditions are theyre kept in.they want a puppy and they want it NOW!and so what if its been reared in a shed and its mothers never seen daylight in its life?its pure selfishness and couldnt care less attitude.what doesnt help also is when you have the likes of coleen rooney buying from these places.it just helps to keep the hellholes open and thriving.

This has got to be one of the biggest setbacks to canine welfare ever! Various celebrities with 'fashionable' breeds, sporting designer accessories and people think, "yeah, I want to be like that!" 'teacup' breeds, pugs, and various bull breeds seem to be particularly 'fashionable'. If only someone could get the celebs on side and make people realise that a dog is not a fashion accessory!! Go buy another Balenciaga (sp?)/ Gucci handbag!!!!

Quite a while ago some neighbours bought a Jack Russell puppy. It was delivered half way - they met and the puppy was handed over to them from the breeder's car. They didn't see the Mum, or where the pup was reared. Needless to say the puppy died after about 2 weeks leaving them with expensive vet bills. The so-called breeders didn't want to know.  I couldn't believe people could be so stupid.

After that they bought an EBT X puppy. It was a lovely dog, but sadly it never got walked or got taken to dog training classes to be socialised, and they seemed surprised when it kept getting out and wouldn't come back. :- One day it chewed a new sofa cushion and the wife ranted on so much it was then rehomed. So sad as it could have been a lovely dog in the right environment. :( :(

I've just had a similar 'rant' about some of my neighbours on another thread about dog training!!

Bring in 'Dog Owner Proficiency Certificates' that's what I say, although sadly, they'd be a low priority in the grand scheme of things!!

The only way is to prohibit sale of dogs in pet shops. That will not stop all sort of bad practices, but it will stop impulse buying. i also know several people who bought their dogs in petshops despite the fact they knew very well that the pup came from puppy farm, what the conditions are and that they should not support this trade. But the pet shop was on their way to work, they walked past these pups for weeks and when finally there was one desperately sad puppy sitting there all alone, they just could not leave it there. And that is what the petshops trade on. People feel they at least can give this one dog good home.

The way is to lobby politicians.

Maybe if enough genuine breeders were to drop their prices ,would it have any impact on this market ?

This is a pretty 'soft' video and generally sympathetic to the puppy farmers, but 30,000 pups exported to the UK every year is a horrifying statistic, where on earth do they all go? :(
Even if the conditions are reasonable and the dogs are as well cared for as they say, this surely can't be the right way to breed dogs, one place has up to 500 breeding bitches

Very good topic and some good replies...

The main point is that much to my surprise I find that the dog population in this country numbers 10.3 million, taking that a dog lives for about 10 years and the owner might want to replace it then to keep the staus quo over a million puppies have to be born.

Its better that tough legalisation in put into place than driving English or Irish P/F out of business other wise as is beginning to happen through demand we are importing dogs from Poland and other eastern countries where the legalisation is dismal

The other way is what PETA supports that all pet animals are banned.

I find this amazing - so some pet shops in the UK have cages of puppies and kittens for sale, just like you see cages of hamsters, budgies and guinea pigs?

and mass produced rabbits etc

Here in Australia pet shop prices are usually higher than what breeders ask.

 They pay his MORTGAGE.

They are bred from once a year what for the rest of there lives

They dont even atempt to come out from there kennel.

SICK TO THE STOMACH.
most if not all breeding bitches from puppy farms are bred from their first season, and every season there after untill they are no longer required or they become ill or cost money ie need a C section, no puppy farmer will breed only once a year from one bitch as it would cost them more to keep the bitch, its a business after all.

Ive seen first hand the state these poor dogs come into rescue from puppy farms, they are dogs in body but in mind they are just shells, they know no human kindness they often fear people dont know how to play, or interact with humans and take comfort in other dogs, those that have been fortunate to have had other company, those who have been kept in 6ft concerete pens with no bedding,no company, no light,no vet care, no socialising little food and in filthy conditions !!! on the plus side with care, time ,patience and love most become adjusted and find new homes.

A few years ago an adorable ex breeding Lab came into rescue from Ireland, she had a mammary tumour the size of a grapefruit, she had not long had pups as she was still producing milk, the vet decided it was too bad to remove, her bloods showed she was riddled with cancer so surgery would have been futile, a happy little thing she was, considering her short life had been so bad at the hands of man, the tumour must have been noticable by her breeders for a very long time yet they still used her to produce litters of pups for them !!! she was fostered by an amazing lady who gave her all the home comforts she had never had, fed her up, loved her, and showed her the good side of humans. I was hoping to visit her as we were due to go visit after the christmas holidays, unfortunately Mary-Lou took a turn for the worse and it was decided she had had enough.

Her fosterer bought Christmas to Mary-Lou 2 weeks early, she had a christmas dinner, she snuggled on the sofa and watched christmas movies and she ate her favourite ginger biscuits . Mary-Lou was PTS in the arms of the only human to have showed her the love all animals deserve,

The reality of breeding bitches and stud dogs from puppy farmers to back yard breeders needs to be shared, people have no clue what goes on.
