My Whippet puppy is now 9wks. She had her first injection at 8wks. 4 days after it she was poorly with a temp, the runs with blood in it. A Whippet breeder blamed it on me for getting her vaccinated too yound and said that I should have waited till she was at least 12wks.

After taking her to the Vets I was told it was nothing to do with the jab and that she had picked up an infection.

She is now 100% better.

What age should you get them done?

As far as I see it I want her to be able to come out and about with me and get socialised at puppy classes etc as soon as possible. But I was also told that a Whippet pup should be kept in the garden until they are at least 6 months old. This is ok for owners with massive gardens but mine isn't and she can't really race around. And she howls when I take the others out without her so they aren't getting much exercise at the moment. I tried carrying her but she wriggles and bites wanting to join in!

i got my pup 10 days ago . took him for his 1st vac last wed . he was 9 1/2 weeks old with no problems what so ever .

on the other hand my older girl was 9 months old when i got her and i got her vaccinated a few days after i brought her home ,, she was quite sick for 48 hours after so i left her 3 weeks ubtill her 2nd vac and again for a couple of hgours she was very "off".

so ive not found any hard and fast rules :b

i do know that as whippets do not have a lot of body fat to absorbe these things ,,, injections , anesthetic etc they are more prone to having reactions ??

No fixed age. Vets will do from very young. Best to wait as long as you can. Let their own system begin to build up. To save her from having to go thru whole process again if she is well she needs 2nd jab in 10th week. Whippet pups should not get free running out of the garden, or in fact climb stairs etc,for fear of damaging joints and limbs

My vet does the 1st 1 from 8 weeks but wont do the 2nd till they are at least 12 weeks.

I think it does vary from vet to vet.

Our vet does them at 8 and 10 weeks old

we had Indys first jab done at 7 weeks with 7 other dogs in the house I was glad she was done as soon as she could be. she has had do ill effects and has been abell to socilis and start puppy classes 2 weeks after her second jab

Hiya Kirs, :)

We had Star done at 9 weeks when we got her and then again at 11. No problems with her at all.

That's what you did with Finbar & Cloud isnt it?

I agree that it's v important to socialise them I dont think you've done anything wrong. She propbably ate too much Gpig poo :x

If I ever get another puppy :( :( :( I might wait until 14 weeks to vaccinate because it is meant to give immunity for longer - but we get lots of comings and goings here so any pup would get lots of socialisation anyway.

Mark (where's Stars collar :p ) - that's interesting I've never heard of a 4 week gap between injections before. Can you not take the pups out until 13 weeks then? Does it have to be a 4 week gap or could you do it 10 and then 12 weeks?

Mine have just had first at 8 weeks , the next are due at 10 weeks then OK to socialise with other dogs at 11weeks. They have showed no ill effects so far.

Yes, there are fixed ages, these vary depending on the brand of vaccine and the diseases which the vaccine is protecting against. Most are at weeks 8 and 10, although some are 8 and 12, and some pups can be vaccinated much younger for Parvo if it is a known problem.

Lesleys bringing the letter stamps back this weekend so i'll get it done then promise (got to be worth a toffee Ice cream next year :- " )

My vet will not give the 2nd Vaccination till the pup is 12 weeks (i've used him for 25 years and thats always been his policy)

he will do the 1st one from 8 weeks onwards but there must a at least a 2 week gap.

EG: 8 & 12, 9 & 12, 10 & 12, 11 &13 and so on.

We always have ours done at 8 and 10 weeks - out socialising at 11. Not had any problems with this.

I think you might end up with a nervous wreck of a dog if you did this. I have seen a couple of puppies that this has happened to and its not good. Maybe though they really meant don't take them out for lots of long walks untill they are 6 months as over exercise can be bad for them too but they should defo. be taken out for short walks and socialising as soon as possible IMO.

Mine insists that the pup spends a week at new home b4 giving first jab. Then second 2 weeks after the first.

What a sensible Vet!!!

It really infuriates me  when puppy purchasers rush off to the Vet the minute they have got their puppy instead of letting them settle in and find their feet for a few days, despite whatever the breeder might tell them :b  . Do they honestly think that a lively healthy puppy is going to have a terminal problem that won't wait to be diagnosed for a few days???

Twiglet was with us for a week before she had her first injection. She is booked in to have her second at 12 weeks, so that is a 4 week gap between them. She can then go out a week after the second.

Yes Rae, I did get Finn done exactly the same and no probs. I didn't get Cloud till he was about 11 weeks and got his first one a few days after that.

I felt pretty s**t when she was ill because I was getting blamed for it off other people who weren't really involved in the pup I bought but who I have always turned to for advice. It also turned a bit personal when I was told that the pup wasn't worth what I had paid for her and I was made to feel like I hadn't looked into any of it at all, when infact I had really done my homework.

I do think that I paid a ridiculous amount of money for her but at the end of the day I had been looking for a blue bitch and she was just what I was looking for. And no, I didn't see her parents or even go to the house where she was born. I met them 1/2 way between mine and their house but I had talked to them a lot of times beforehand.

Our practice here in Canada is to have the whole litter innoculated with the typical shots - parvo, parinfleunza, distemper, coronavirus etc. at 8 weeks, always BEFORE we allow them to go to their new homes. We would not think of letting any pups go until they have had that first shot.

For the dogs we keep we do a second shot at 12 weeks, and a third at 16 weeks, at which time we sometimes also get a rabies vaccination, although we are increasingly let this go till the pup is 6 months because the vaccine is most effective in somewhat older puppies.

We advise puppy homes to follow this same course. None of the puppy classes in Canada will allow a puppy to participate in the classes till it has all its shots and proof of vaccination must be provided before a puppy will be entered in any class. When we place pups we stress that the owner should keep the dog close to home and away from other dogs not part of the household till all the shots are done.

The young dog gets a booster shot 12 months after its last session of shots, then we skip two years, then do another booster shot. Our rabies shots are 3 year shots and increasingly the regular shots we have here are 2 year shots which means a dog is vaccinated less over the course of its life. We do not vaccinate older dogs -- we believe they, like humans, develop a level of immunity after three or four boosters over the first half of their lives, and we have never had a problem on that basis.

That is very similar to what we do here in OZ. Leaving their mum, siblings all else they are familiar with is very stressful for young puppies, vaccinating them on top of that can only create more problems as stress makes them already more susceptible to infection. I have always vaccinated my puppies at least 1 week, but preferably two before I let them go. If i run them on, I give them any follow up shots, which become due while they are with me.

so confusing! my boy had his at 11wks as the vet said earlier was too soon, and his 2nd jab, after a 3wk gap, is next week. i suppose it could depend on the breed?

 like collies and panacur?
