I think a lot of people may find this interesting. I posted a message about our new pup and her radical behaviour. I have had a whippet pup before and know exactly what to expect and how to train them. Even so, this pup was running rings around us. She would NEVER rest and has been crying literally all night. In the first 10 days I dont think I can remember seeing her with her eyes shut, even when in her crate.

Our other dog was as good as gold, calm and manageable. When we got that pup, she was very fussy with her food and would not eat any of the complete foods. We had no option but to keep her on the good old mince/brown bread etc.

The new puppy has been fed on Burns and eats like a horse. We thought great - easy - keep her on that. After days of stress we started to wonder if we could really manage another dog. My wife said we should change the food but I resisted as I thought that Burns was the best. Finally we were getting to desperation stage and thought nothing to loose. This pup has a constitution like an ox so we thought forget about going over slowly - we just banged out a dish full of mince and brown bread.

The result has been nothing short of miraculous. The moment - and I mean the MOMENT - she finished that meal she has been a different dog. Calm, manageable - her play with our other dog is much more controlled - and miracle or miracles - after some play she took herself off to bed and SLEPT! She had another meal at 7.30 and was just the same.

In addition to this we went out later and got one of those collers from the vet that gives off calming pheromones.

The night before we got 3 hours sleep. It sounded like there was a murder in the house. Last night she went down at 9.30 and slept through to 6.30 am straight without a wimper.

I hope Im not jumping the gun and that this behaviour will continue. One thing for sure, like Hollie she is staying on home made food for the forseeable future.

That's very interesting I must remember that next time I get a hyper puppy .

I have had 5 whippets , 3 from pups and 2 rescues . 2 of my pups were nice and calm and the other completely hyper , mind you she is 15 now and still hyper for a 15 year old maybe it's not too late for the brown bread and mince :D

:b MMMM , VERY INTERESTING. IF THIS IS WORKING IM ALL FOR IT. HOW WILL YOU GO ON WITH PUP GETTING ALL THE OTHER NUTRIENTS SHE NEEDS ??

I guess well start adding in cooked veg etc. And maybe a bit of complan or similar. If you have any suggestions please let me know. One thing is for sure, the situation as it was was simply unsustainable.

ALL I CAN THINK OF IS BONEMEAL AND FISH OILS........ CONSTIPATION AND SQUITS :x :x :x IN THAT ORDER!!!!!

LET US KNOW HOW YOU GET ON . :)

Thanks and will do. The report from the home front this am is all well and calm. Hope its not the calm before another storm!!

Hi I had to feed one of ours on home cooked food as he has lots of digestion problems, when he was younger I would give him 2 drinks a day of welpi to make sure he gets all his vitamins and minerals and when older he has SA37 like all my dogs (vitamin and mineral supplement). They all seem to do very well on it, pics in my signature

all the best with your pups

Isn't that interesting? A lot of people would say that wheat & beef (as in brown bread and mince) were more likely to give problems, but I guess it is a question of working out what your own dog is sensitive too. Some people (including a trainer I consulted when I thought I wasn't going to survive Grace's manic puppy behaviour  ) swear by bones & raw food diets. I didn't try it, and for her doing some crate training helped her find her 'off' switch. I'm sure you won't go far wrong if you add other foods one at a time and see if anything sends her loopy. Good luck, I'll bet you are looking forward to catching up on your sleep!

I understand your comment about wheat - but why beef? I am well into all the theory of the complete premium foods and not anti all that, and so I cant explain why it appears not to suit her. The brown bread/mince is a rather old fashioned idea that Mr wifes mum used for all her dogs - every one of which lived a long and healthy life - but I must say I was reluctant to try it with such good dry foods available. I think we will give her a few days, hopefully to settle, and then replace the bread with pasta/rice/ veggies etc. One thing is for sure - its behaving like a completely different pup - remarkable.

I dont think any of this is to do with an allergy? Changing foods - even having her injections etc - has not upset her tummy one little bit.

The other thing my wife is convinced about, although again I am not sure myself, is that the dry foods make her much more thirsty. Seems to me the overall level of fluid intake is likely to be similar irrespective of whether that is via dry food and plenty of water, or by wet food and less need for water? :b

I once rescued a year old whippet dog who was manic, up and down the garden all day and only stopped for a couple of hours at night [it was summer]

He was fed on Eukanuba and I nearly went mad, however I dont use a compleat food for my whips and changed him on to tripe and meat with whole meal mixer and he calmed down at once, some of them are definately food sensative.

You could alway try adding a wholemeal biscuit to your dogs diet it is how we always used to feed before some bright spark invented compleat

I am reading your post and remembering the similarly challenging time we had with our Shiba Inu puppy . He was manic and just never sat at piece for a minute . He reacted to all complete dog foods and tinned dog foods and the vet came to the conclusion he was reacting to the Preservatives in them like a child on E-numbers , even the ones with natural preservatives . I changed his diet to tripe and wholemeal biscuit and he became a different dog over night .

I didn't intend to ever change him onto anything else until I discovered Laughing Dog Complete food 2 years ago and he has been great on it ever since . It is a baked complete with no preservatives at all and not sprayed with any fats to make it palatable . I use the Roast chicken dinner and he and his mother just love it with no ill effects at all .

If you would like a link to their website I will be glad to PM it to you .

Kindest regards

Thanks - how interesting. That link would be great. Pleased to say no return to previous behaviour after a couple of days so hopefully we have cracked it - but do need to get her on a more perminant diet.

If she is enjoying the mince and it is having a positive effect on her behaviour, it might be worth looking into feeding her a raw diet on a permanent basis. There are LOADS of threads on the subject here.

If you have the freezer space, I throughly recommend it.

I used to base my dogs diet on minced beef until somebody pointed out to me that in the wild dogs would rarely manage to get something the size of a cow. Rabbit, chicken or even lamb is much more like it. Since then I have been feeding mostly chicken. With occasional beef, lamb, kangaroo or rabbit if I can that.

I think Ill struggle with the kangaroo - perhaps the odd postman or traffic warden?
