Hi there

Any help will be really appreciated. :flowers:

I have an 8 week old Rotti/German Shep. He is amazing... so much fun, toilet training going really well, and he is fully crate trained. The only problem i have is his constant biting and nipping. I understand he's a pup and this is what they do, but sometimes its really hard and i have two small children.

I have done every trick in the book, When he bites ive replaced my hand with a toy and praised him for using the toy, i've ignored him and turned my back on him. i've even made a loud pitch noice to show that he has hurt me again nothing works. Its mostley when he is excited, and you can not stroke him he just goes for your hand.

Please help lol :- )

DVD

  • Your Clever Dog: Puppy biting, chewing and over-excitability with children
Sarah Whitehead

All puppies bite! They come with a set of needlesharp teeth that a shark would be proud of. This behaviour is perfectly normal, but needs to be prevented in order for the dog to become a calm and social member of the family.

This DVD is specially designed to show you exactly what you need to do to reduce and then stop your puppy from biting and mouthing using only kind and fair methods, and the secrets that top dog trainers know.

This DVD also covers the essentials for making sure that your ‘puppy chewing machine flexes his teeth on all the right things, and leaves your shoes, the kids’ toys and your furniture alone.

Sarah Whitehead also gives advice on puppies and children, and how to ensure they grow up happily together.

Including:

• Why biting is an integral part of your puppy’s development

• How to control your puppy’s biting

• How to keep kids safe with your puppy

• How to play with your puppy to help control biting

The pack contains: A clicker, tab handle, training manual, instructional DVD, 55 mins approx running time including Bonus trick, Bonus Training Session, Intro to Clicker Training, Q & A with Sarah

He's only 8 weeks, so you do need to understand that his ability to learn is age dependent, just like a baby's development means that they won't understand words until they reach a certain age.

Even if you get it home to him that mouthing is not allowed right now, in a couple of months' time he'll be starting to boundary test and to have a mouth that feels odd because he's getting ready to teeth, so he'll probably start all over again with both mouthing you and with chewing around the house.

The key to this is patience and consistency :)

Thank you for your response. He's doing so well in all other areas, its when he launches at you mouth open. but im gunna keep at it with him. I cant be mad at him... He's the first pup i have had since leaving my parents and he is just amazing to have around.

Thanks again :)

I just got a seven month rotti which we rescued living in a flat with another two year old. He too has started the biting but jaws a bit stronger read up on the NILIF method have been practising the last two days and has helped a lot but you need to persevere these dogs are very strong natured this is my third .good luck

Hello Tina - welcome to Dog Forum!

Can you show us a picture of your doggy??

Many Thanks Tina

I will have a go with the NILIF.... He's 15 weeks old now! He's absolutly amazing, he sits and waits for his food when it is on the floor untill i tell him its ok to eat... He gives paw and lays down when told, But the biting has continued. i find it really hard to fuss him because everytime i do he just goes for my hands so i cant just sit and give him a cuddle. Its really upsetting.

Oh my goodness - he is completely adorable!!!!

That butter wouldn't melt look must be very hard to be angry with.

Keep going with consistency, NILIF and denying him every bit of attention that you can when he's worked up (coupled with lots of love as soon as he's calmed down). It will pay off, but you need to keep going with it.

He's doing really well. he is my first dog and i didnt realise i would love him as much as i do. He truley is my best friend!!

Is it safe to give him them bones that are filled with meat yet? I cant seem to find a toy for him that will last lonher than 5 mins!! lol

I think so?

How is he getting on with his nipping and biting?

Have you tried the big black kongs? They are pretty indestructable?

Yes i've seen those, im going to invest.

Nipping and biting is ok... Its not as much as it used to be. He thinks im playing all the time and he can get a bit rough.

He doesnt do it to the Children, hes really soft with them lol
