a friend has 4 greyhound pups.which have started scratching, and have a lot of dandruff worst around the pins /rear.they are kenneled,on that bailed stuff cut up paper/?. he still puts the heat lamp on. they are i think 10 week.

he is just beat what it is as they are scratting more than usual .there is no redness.

antboby got any ideas???????

Beware the dandruff doesn't have feet ie lice (w00t)

Has he taken them to a vet? If the cause is not apparent they can do a skin scrape and analyse it to find out what's going on. Could be an allergy, but a vet would be my first port of call.

I would get the checked incase its mange the quicket its treeted the easer it is to treet

It could be the light that is causing it drying the skin--

What sort of light and how near is it positioned ?

it has happend on ocassions to mine --

but vet is the place to find out

after 8years of studdies they should have the answer--

steve

think he will take to vets, thought might get some good ideas on here

the light sounds interesting, maybe add oil to there diet. bath in tea tree shampoo,or dove soap is mild enough.

think they on austrailian pup food

:) When i first got Leia she was on red mills puppy food and then i was told how great this new Australian puppy food was, so i bought some and tried it, within a day or two Leia and one of my other dogs came up in a terrible rash and was scratching like mad, i only fed it to Leia but Trent is a greedy bugger and was finishing off her food, :p I stopped the Australian food straight away and they both returned to normal, Hope this might help you, (still got a full bag in the garage now but i won't use it again. Diane

interesting

DavidH this is the Australian puppy food that i had problems with, and it does say that it is for greyhounds, other people i know used it on their pups with no problems so it might not be the problem with your friends dogs, (it's certainly worth telling your friend) also the scratching turned into a scabby type spot, i couldn't put it down to anything else at the time and neither could the vet.

It sounds like it might be Walking Dandruff Mitehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheyletiella

Easily cured, my showbred came with this mite as free extra ;)

Was gonna say exactly the same  Treat with Frontline David.Has to be the spray on not the spot things on back of neck. One treatment should be enough. Will have to do any others cause its contageous. One of our local vets is allergic to the mite,so if its suspected he is fetched in to touch the dog concerned.Within a minute his hands and arms start itching  cheaper than having a scraping done

Our Boo always had dry scaley skin as a pup no matter what i tried she still had it when she got to about 6 month's it just went think its a pup thing in some cases just like some babies get dry skin (w00t)

Does the dry skin flake away or does it have a sticky texture making it cling to the body. I would get a skin scrape at the vets and get it checked.

The last experience I had of this with a puppy that had been kept outside it turned out to be mites. This was cleared up with a course of treatment which was spread over three months.
