My 10 month old Labrador has come into her first heat. She's been bleeding (only drips) for about 11 days and this morning my older male dog was licking her (don't worry we have a close eye on them and girlie is crated when we're out!) and then she started dripping watery blood on the kitchen floor - I would say more than usual. Is this normal? I was only a few seconds and stopped again.

I haven't had girls so someone else will answer your question. But I will say I've read that a cage may not be enough to stop a really determined dog.

He doesn't bother her when she's in the cage he's 11yrs old so he's quite happy snoozing. I was just wanting to find out if the watery bloody was a normal part of the female dog cycle

Their cycles are as varied within the normal spectrum as ours are, and your girl sounds perfectly normal. Subsequent seasons may be different from the first as hormones settle down. Also be aware that bitches can be fertile and willing to mate into the 4th and even the 5th week of a season, when all appears to be over.

Please keep male and female well apart behind separate closed doors when you are not there to supervise, as relying on age, cage or apparent disinterest has led to many an unwanted litter.

Thank you for your reassurance. It's all unusual when you haven't owned a female before. We've definitely got a close eye on them both and plenty of distraction and time seperate
