Hello - I am new to the board and wonder if there is a topic heading under which I might be able to post some rescue dogs I have in my care. I live in Ireland and have mostly greyhounds, though I do also have a special sloughi boy. I generally take in dogs in bad condition and rehabilitate them and make them ready for homing. So - is there a specific spot for posting a few dogs?

Thanks!

hi wolfhound,

i don't think there is a specific board to post on, but if u go to www.lurcher.org.uk u can post them on there as they have specific boards for dogs needing homes.

hope this helps

Dave

Hi Mate depending what they are you could ad them in the most appropriat forum.

ie: whippets in General Descussion Whippets, Lurchers in the Lurcher section greyhounds in General dog.

Maybe it's time K9 had a section just for rescues?.

Thats a great idea mark, we used to rescue greyhounds and lurchers and even tho we don't really do it fulltime anymore we are expecting a few phone calls over the xmas period about dogs in need and it would be great if we could post the poor little mites on here, where genuine dog lovers may be able to help.

i'm all for it.

Dave

I agree that is a good idea that way if some one was looking for a dog to rescue they could straight to where they needed to be

seems an excellent idea

Thats a realy good idea you should approach nigel to se if he will put on a new forum for dogs in need of rehoming & maybe you could be the moderator for it

I think a rescue forum would be great, however (and i intend to bring this up with Nigel) i think it should stick to just "rescue" and not spill over into puppies too as imo too many people are breeding litters on this board and using k9 to sell their pups.

that would be brilliant  there are so many dogs out there that deserve to live out their days as part of a family. the more that get rehomed, the more wolfhound, and others that foster, can help.

I agree with lalena. it seems most fitting that for a community of people who care for dogs, there should be part of that community that cares about the rehoming of dogs in need.

Really good idea. :))

I agree the section should be rescue only, but I don't disagree with people homing their puppies on here because they are more likely to get a good home that way, just my oppinion :)

Still think a rescue section would be a brill idea

And dont have a problem with folk posting their own litters-like *Lesley* think they have a good chance of finding suitable homes that way.

Maybe just split the section a little?

Rescue/Rehoming.

Pups for sale.

Perhaps also a general for sale section? For those members with sites with goods for sale, and other members maybe just wanting to dispose of dog related items...that sometimes crops up in General Dog related discussion.

Just my opinion - think it would streamline a bit for folk just getting aquainted with the site or visting as they are searching for a rescue dog or looking to buy a pup.

Afore anyone suggests it  I dont have a litter or goods for sale or am I likely to have ;) However, have been involved with rescue lurchers longer than i care to remember and anything to give them increased chances of a decent loving permanent home is excellent news to me. Sincerely hope that K9 2006 can see that happen

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Nigel has suggested I post rescue dogs in the general dog-related discussion section for now. Although maybe not all the dogs I have here would be suitable for this board, a few, like Josef, would certainly fit into the niche. Despite his feral years, for example, when I take him out running in huge open fields, he does not wander, but stays "with the pack" and never, ever leaves the group. Although I do not know much about coursing, for example, I would think this trait of his is a real plus. Even for those members here who do not course but just have a lot of space and like to let their dogs run, I think I am more likely to find this type of home for him here than on other boards, or the Irish boards, for example. Josef is not likely to be a good candidate for someone who takes him for 2 walks a day and has a small back garden, for example.

Anyway, in the coming week I will be posting some of my crew with photos, descriptions and contact info.

Also, thanks for your encouragement.

I think also added to the rsecue section could be potential Foster homes and those who are prepared to pick and transport dogs between homes.

I work with rescue dogs and obviously have a special interest in lurcher types, I would find it helpful to be able to publicise certain dogs on here. I would also be willing to help with transport etc if needed.

I personaly think BJ would be the best moderator for a rescue/rehoming forum. (i'd be happy to over see it if noone else wants to)

I personaly feel that puppy sales should be kept away from a rescue section, if anyone wants to advertise a litter theres plenty of other places on K9 that they could post pups for sale.

:( Strange that I had this conversation last Saturday. So, for what it's worth, IMO if you believe that your bitch is worthy of the breed and thus worth breeding a litter you should have your potential purchasers lined up BEFORE you mate the bitch. If you haven't got the customer base, why are you breeding??? So advertising them on the web should not be necessary - should it? And if they are advertised, is the breeder going to pay a percentage of the sale of the pup to K9?

It is very bad practice to advertise live stock on the web - this is NOT the medium for the sale of puppies. They are too important to be traded like an unwanted present on EBay.

A part of me also feels the same way about rescue long dogs. That is not to say that there shouldn't be someway of letting Joe Public know they are available, but I just don't know how it could be done safely!

There are already dedicated rescue sites, and very often, whippets and whippet x breeds will be brought to the attention of members of this board. I feel rescue could take over the site which would be a shame and possibly drown the community that has been established by the Nigel and Judy.

For me, I read the whippet stuff, particularly the racing and dip into chit chat etc. If I need a tug on the heart stings, I click on the rescue pages (of which there are many).

As for puppies for sale, Carmel has a point, if the demand is there, by all means breed.............Every-one gets let down from time to time, then K9 can become a useful source to find great owners (if it wasn't for this site, I wouldn't have my darling Fynn  )

about rescue longdogs and how they can be safely posted on the web - this can be done by going to specific boards or sites and getting homechecks done, as well as arranging for backup if the homing does not work.

Because the particular dog I had in mind to post here is so unusual, and there are no suitable sites for him, this board, to me, seemed like the next best thing to a breed site.

Perhaps if certain criteria was estalbished for posting rescue dogs, that would help to control and keep it from getting too large.
