i was wondering how people with say 4 or more dogs cope?!! (w00t) .....do you keep your dogs inside?...or are they outside?.....does it depend on whether they are show dogs or working dogs?....i just cant imagine fitting any more in my house?...i used to have 3 dogs (2 lurchers and a border collie)before i had my son and it was hard work!....i know whippets are quite quiet generally as a breed but even when my 2 play a couple of times a day ..they bounce of all the walls!!!!! :p is there a secret?

thanks:)

(not that im thinking of getting another! o:) )

We enjoy 8 adults & 2 pups (one of whom is waiting for her new home to be ready for her)

We all live indoors & are usually to be found together in the same room. We have a couple of large crates in the lounge, which are dog beds most of the time but safe havens if people visit who do not understand whippets! We have 3 more crates in the bedroom which, at night, house all but the oldest 4!

When they go 'stir crazy' they use the garden :- "

Walks are completed in 3 shifts!

On Boxing day we had a party .... 17 whippets found room to have fun in our lounge. :huggles:

Happy New Year

Our cottage is 3 bedroomed + dining room. Our lounge is a reasonable size. Our garden usually copes - but is a quagmire at present! In the middle of the lawn(?) is a puppy piddle & poop pen, which keeps the youngsters safe while the adults race round it! (w00t) :teehee:

thats very true!....have you got some pics of your dogs....i would love to see them :D

i have 6 dogs 5 whippet and a choc lab, all live in the house without any problem, i have a dog flap so their mad half hour includes going in and out, it also means it they (by that i mean charlie!) steal anything i have to hunt for it in the garden  i walk all mine together to (w00t)

Hi Kaz,

We have 11 whippets & 1 Greyhound, they all live in the house, but we also do shift work, letting them in so many at a time so we dont have chaos, i used to have a kitchen but now its more like a kennel there are cages everywhere, this is where they all sleep at night and where they go when we go out.

I dont believe theres anything wrong with them being outside as long as they have heating in the winter, we did put a lurcher we had about 20 years ago outside, Mark had built a lovely kennel with a big run on it she loved it but after hours of jumping up at every sound, thinking someone was trying to pinch her i brought her in at 3am and none have gone outside since.

I have 5 whippets,2 dogs & 3 bitches,& they all live in the house.I wouldn't have it any other way!

4 of them i show,& Izzy is a rescue, but whatever, they will always be my beloved pets

During the summer months, the door is always open & they tend to go mad in the garden, but it gets a bit chaotic sometimes in the winter when they all start playing in the house & charging up & down the stairs & bouncing off the furniture, but what the heck, that's the joys of owning whippets

At night,Flyn & Murph sleep on or in my bed,Izzy sleeps wherever she chooses, but not on my bed,cos she chooses not too  & Pops & daisy sleep in a cage each with a soft bed in & a duvet which they bury themselves in :huggles:

im REALLY SHOCKED!!!! that all your dogs seem to live inside!

especially you paula with all yours!!!!!....im sure its like anything ...you cant imagine it but when you do it its something you dont even think about!(if you know what i mean? (w00t) )

id love a whole family of whippets too and greyhounds too!....im sure i will one day as my son gets older!

thanks for all your replies but i think the answer my husband wanted was for everyone to say"no its hell...worst decision of my life!",...as if! lol :p

i would really like to see some group pics though!...please!?

p.s paula ...are there any pics of your greyhound on k9 for me to see?,...id love to see him?

Compared to most breeds, whippets are an absolute joy to have in the house, I really don't know how people with large gundog-type breeds cope in small houses (I think they just develop a complete ability to ignore mud-covered floors, knocked-over furniture and non-stop barking  apologies to our friend Sita-lab, we do love you really :- " ). Five whippets are probably still less trouble in the house than a single golden retriever

Hi Kaz,

If you look under the thread Aggie arrives you can see pics of her there, she looks an absolute monster compared to the whippets but size dosent matter as the whippets have put her in her place already, there is a pic of her with little Todd and that really shows the size difference.

IMO having 11 whippets is just the same as having 1, it just takes longer to do everything, feeding is done in shifts, letting out is done in shifts walking to, but the love that you get back from them is 11 times more so well worth the extra time.

We have 11 Whippets, 1 ESS, 2 cats and a shubunkin ( a blue merle goldfish!). The Whippies all live indoors, the ESS still lives out, even though she is on her own now. I thought she would be a problem when the old boy was PTS but she does not seem to miss him.

1 Whippie comes up to bed with us, the 2 half-sisters sleep in the large understairs cupboard (it has a stable door on it in case you are wondering!) and the rest sleep in the dog-end of the big L-shaped kitchen. As we have just had a new kitchen at vast expense they are now confined to 'their' end but always had their beds down there anyway so no change really, except they cannot wander into the cooking area at will!! What was the lean-to between the garage and the kitchen has now been done up into a proper Utility Room and the cats can come and go into there as they please. Or ask to come in through the French doors into the sitting room! There is also a soft crate permanently up in the sitting room which the girls like going into.

When we are at home they have free range of the sitting room and kitchen, unless girls are in season, at which time they are in the sitting room and boys confined to the kitchen.

They are exercised in two lots.

I've got one of the smaller households with a mere 5! :- " I've got 2 greyhounds, 2 whippets and 1 whippet x. They all live inside with me and sleep on the sofa. The puppy, Logan, is coming up to bed with me on his own at the moment as otherwise he starts play fighting with Albie at bed time! The others sleep in the lounge. There's a crate in there for the puppy for when I go out, but otherwise they all ignore it! I usually exercise them all at once but that's on hold at the moment until the puppy has had his 2nd jab. :)

They all get on really well and are currently snoozing in the front room while I'm on the computer in the dining room. :D

I only have a modest sized house (2 bed) but I'm lucky in that garden is huge. It's also uncultivated at the moment so they can't do any damage. I'm also not that house proud, although I do like things relatively clean and tidy, so a few dog hairs and a bit of mud don't bother me - fortunately! (w00t)

(w00t) this is fascinating , reading how the multi-whippet households manage, don't think I'm quite laid back enough for 11 (w00t) and I think we're extremely lucky with Ella, 8 mth whippet as she's small, size wise and very sleepy.

Having the living room full of toys with tiny pieces and fluffy stuff and sweets everywhere - she was hardly any trouble, like today when we took the tree down and were boxing up the deccys, she was very inquisitive, but gently stepped between everything while she had a good sniff o:)

I keep a dog towel by the french windows to wipe her feet when she's been outside, apart from scratching the door and frame she hasn't been a chewy dog  hope I'm not speaking too soon, she's still got her 1st soft toys in one piece

Most of the time you just have to say 'no' in a firm voice and after a 1 or 2 goes she stops o:)

but did I get surprise when her brother came down, they tore round the place like they'd never been on a run, bouncing off the sofa ( and Riley's family have kindly offered to look after Ella when we go away for 10 days........hope they're still our friends when we get back  )
