Ive just got a question that is something that has just occured to me  and hope someone can help.. ( its only out of curiosity (sp))

If you are showing a dog in a junior class for example but its say, 10 months old ( so technically a pup) and it wins the class, would it go on to compete for best puppy along with minor puppy and puppy because of its age, or would it be with the adults?

and say it won BOB, it would go on to the adult group or puppy group? or both?

If a 10 month old pup WON a junior class, it would compete for Best Puppy and in the challenge as it won its class.

If it placed in the junior class (but not first) as long as it was the highest placed puppy in the junior class it could still compete for BP, but obviously not in the challenge as it has been beaten (only the winner of the junior class can compete for BOB or BD/BB)

If it won BP and BOB it could compete in both the Hound group and hound puppy group I believe!

Hope this is right, but please correct me if I'm wrong!

No ,thats quite right

Thats why India could compete in both the Adult group and the puppy Group , NOW if she had been 1st or 2nd in the Adult group , and not beaten by a pup ( if 2nd) she would automatically have won the Puppy Group , but as she got 3rd :( she had to compete against the other pups .

I think i get it! thanks for that

ALSO, IF ENTERED IN JUNIOR AND THE FIRST FIVE ARE ALL ADULTS, AND A PUPPY WAS UNPLACED IN CANSTILL CHALLENGE FOR BEST PUPPY,IT DOSENT HAVE TO BE PLACED :)

thanks for that, Id never of known! Would it be the exhibitors job to note the ages of the placed dogs, if the above senario happened and point it out? or should the steward realise and tell you?

Dont think so Helen , what if there was more than one pup unplaced ? I feel sure you HAVE to be placed. otherwise whats to stop you going in any class other than puppy , just so you can chellange for best pup, r

afraid not jax, when i took my rules and regs exam for judging, it was brought up for discussion and the tutor said , as it hadnt been beaten by a PUPPY , it was an unbeaten puppy !! If more or one pup in the junior class they can all chalenge,

However, if i was unplaced in the junior class, dont think i would bother to challenge !!

That is a bit of a daft ruling, god knows what the puppy challenge at a club Ch show would be like (w00t)

See that's what *I* thought, but have been told by stewards and judges that isn't so. It has to place.

Hmmmm where can we go to find out for sure.

The WHIPPET CLUB schedule confirms what I thought o:)

BPIS. Where a best puppy in show competition is scheduled, the Best Puppy in Show is a puppy which has competed and is unbeaten by any other puppy exhibited at the same show. Where the BIS is a puppy it will automatically also be BPIS. Similarly if the reseve BIS is a puppy which has only been beaten by an adult dog it will automatically be BPIS.

So when a puppy is entered in any class where it remains unbeaten by a puppy, even if unplaced in that class, eg entered in OPEN but unplaced, it can go in for BPIS.

Consider, for example, a maiden class at a Ch show which has 20 entries seven of which are dogs under 12months (none of them are entered in any other class) - none of these puppies get placed but ALL are eligible for BPIS.

Usually the reason for NOT entering a puppy in the puppy class is that the owner has TWO puppies at the show and knows they will misbehave if in the same class. Therefore one has to go in another class.

Alternate reasons may be that the dog has 'matured' and will look out-of-place in a puppy class but look OK when compared in a class with adults

Realistically though if the puppy was unplaced in the 'maiden' class it is unlikely to be considered for BPIS although it is eligible for that competition and some exhibitors would not bother taking the pup in for the challenge for BPIS
