everyone aint as old has you

the last rag championships where held at new brancepheth, and it was a nightmare dogs were entered that had never been schoooled properly ,they were jumping over the tapes into other lanes and allsorts,( naturally they were disqualified ) it's not allways the fastest dog that wins .

Hi Rob

I remember racing up the tapes at Stoke - my first ever champion was 16lb Rag Champion Right Rapid.

Stoke ran both types of racing lure as well as rag. It was great fun. I knew Sam very well.

I have a photo that was taken of him presenting me with a trophy. I think Russ (The Magster)

might also have known him as he used to race at Stoke - "when he were a young lad"!!! :p

As did Dave and Sheila Sims owners of Home Alone and Delia Heath, but I am not sure if rag racing

had finished by then.

done rag racing in the 60's (when I was a kid by the way ) they had electronic finish you new who really did win the race provided they hadn't jumped over into the wrong lane of course, it was good fun great atmosphere with the bookies there as well, also seen some bad injuries caused from dogs hitting the posts which wasn't so good

the last one was held at new brancepheth in the early 90s.

I am glad to see this on here Rag Racing --I remember Oliphant taking all england Scratch -with a dog called Yellow Rose -

I am sure many others will remember him for Olllies miricale rub ---serious stuff was that ---the fumes of it were better than most rubs today never mind the actual liquid---lol

My uncle Les had one of the best called Tyo--

We had some great rag racers here in Lancaster and used to race at Barrow/Ulverston in the late fifties and they had the first electric start and photo finnish even in those days so we must have gone backwards when its compared with what we have today.

I have many fond memories of training dogs to run up tapes and hit the rag at the finish--

Just been talking to my dad,he was rag racing from 1946 to 1955. In his words when it was real racing,6 bookies at every meeting,a printed racecard when you paid to get on the field. All meetings were handicaps if you won the handicap your dog went back 3yds;heat winners stayed where they were, losers went up half yd. The main handicapper was jack burgess, some of the tracks were sargaents, meir box lane, cinderhill, mossfield.Just a few of the dogs names racing were, blue mickey, blue smoke, osbournes bet, miss shelia, mark time, sammy, saucy sal, kidberg, slick, gypsy, thats all im putting on for now no fun typing all this with 1 finger.
