For the past 6 month I have been having serious rat problem. My Whippets obviously are not ratters. It never happened before, as I always had cats, so the only rat I ever saw was dead or at least in the jaws of a cat. I never needed to do anything until now. I tried to poison them, which did not seem to make much difference. The spring traps were relieved of their bait each night, some did shut some not, but I never caught a rat in them. Then, in a moment of madness, I bought one of the traps that catch the rats live and unharmed. And it did. So I had live rat, which I had to kill. Last week I finally decided that the only thing to do is to get a cat again. So, please, meet Coco

oh, she is GORGEOUS  i'm not really a cat person, but wow  good luck with the ratting coco  :luck:

OMG Lida, she is gorgeous.

BTW you are not alone with a rodent problem. We were having mouse trouble at the rental house while we were building. Thought I was done with those nasty little beasts when we shifted.... but oh no  Little sods are not welcome in my nice new house. Have to be careful with baits and traps though, because of Phoebe

Good luck with Coco

she is gorgeus, what breed is she.

Burmese?? she is lovely, lets hope she likes catching rats. How are the whips with her, I think mine would tear a cat to peices. I wouldn't be able to trust these ones at all.

Linda

Pleased to meet you Coco - here's hoping you do a good job on those rats.

I don't know whether it was the fact that I had been up for barely 3 minutes when I let the dogs out this morning and so was not seeing straight but I swear there was a baby rabbit in my garden. It had hopped off before I could get the door open but the Whippets know it had been ...

Thing is I don't know where it's come from ... unless someone has been playin a little game with us ...

Coco is gorgeous, hope she doesn't decide Rat is not on the menu! (w00t)

Coco's a lovely looking cat...good luck with her catching the rats :luck:

We had mice, big ones, in the garage/bodega where the whippets have their meals. We bought an electric device for €30.00 which emits, so we are told, ultrasonic sounds ( whatever that means) and the mice disappeared. The manufacturers of this electric device also sell others for frightening off mosquitos, ants and a host of other things including dogs. Should anyone be interested, please contact and I shall try to recover their web-site. Regards, Stephen

Thanks for the lovely comments. Yes, Coco is chocolate Burmese. She is so lovely, friendly and cuddly. The Whippets are very willing to be friends, Coco is not too impressed in this moment. I have her in large crate right next to me in this moment, and she quite happy if the girls sit next to it. But hisses at long noses poked through the wire. Several times a day i send the girls to play outside and let Coco to investigate the house, she is most interested in what is under the stove - that is where the rats come in. :) Anyway, i think it is partiaily the smell of the cat which keeps the rats away.

I was also very worried about the baits, although I placed them in my disused aviary, but I wondered what happens if the cat come out to die and the dogs get her.

She is 2 years old, and i got her from breeder, as she had problems having her first litter and they did not want to breed her again. Kitten would have been easier to introduce into the household, but she is just gorgoeus, i do not mind having to negotiate some terms between her and the Whippy Girls, even if it will take lot of time and effort. :)

Wouldn't it also upset the dogs and a cat?

beautiful looking cat you have there, georgeous colouring

Our cat Chilli is still trying to come to terms with our lot, hope Coco settles quickly

:)

   Lovely ! :luck: with settling her in.

I have to say when it comes to rat duty, it's the whippet of the house that takes charge here.

I've had to use bait a lot recently, and haven't had any problems with other animals getting to it or eating dead rats. If the rats aren't succumbing to the bait, try a different brand, as we had this problem and putting a large quantity of a different type down sorted them out almost over night. (they can wander an awful long way before they die so you always have to be vigilant.)

Have your allergies improved ? Mine have flared right up  , so we now have one very grumpy cat who is banned from being at my side 24/7 :(

get a terrier- the rats and squirrels around our house have no chance getting anywhere near our bins or garden- Flo goes on rat patrol!

she killed a cute looking baby squirrel last week :(

I wish my were, I think my girls are having parties with the rats, I would wake up in the morning and there would be rat droppings everywhere. :b

i tried every bait available, they just keep taking it, occassionally I found dead rat, but their numbers do not seem to diminish. :(

Yes, I have been fine now for long time, and i so when I started to think about cats i went to visit several breeders and found that I am OK with the Burmese. It is the long fine hair of the Persian and even Rag Doll, that is the most problem for me.
