Any suggestions when this critique was written? The judge is still well known in Whippet circles awarding CC's only last year (2007).

Interesting comment re size!

I enjoyed my day immensely at The Whippet C limited show at Oxford. My stewards, the secretary and committee looked after me so well, and I appreciated such a lovely entry. The overall quality was very high indeed, particularly in the puppy bitch classes. In some of the weaker classes I did find the height disparity between certain exhibits so great that they might also have been different breeds! However, these were in the minority. I think hind movement needs watching; quite a few dogs moved very close behind and lacked drive.

Best in show, Selbrook Bracelet; reserve, Tweseldown Glentopknot; best dog, Ballagan Loch Loyal; best puppy, Walkabout Woodbine.

Winners were:

Hoare's Zulu's Black Diamond, magnificent black, in lovely bloom, well developed for age, good steady mover. Best black;

Wright's Pimlico of Crawshaw, spectacular br/ w, covers a lot of ground standing and on the move. Tall, but at nearly a year old, should have finished growing;

Bennett's Millrace of Hardknott, fawn/w, very masculine, moving with real drive. I would like him a little finer through shoulders, but the general picture was balanced and good;

Selby's Selbrook Bright Lancer, silver fawn/w dog, good topline, nice spring of rib. Did not move as well as I know he can;

Worsfold's Summersway Golden Facile, red fawn, in lovely bloom, good excellent front, topline and hocks. moved using every limb to the full extent:

Boundy's Sticklepath Station Master, fawn white trim. I have admired him from the ringside. Covers a lot of ground, good racy outline, well let down hock. Sadly today he was throwing his elbows in front. I have never seen him do this before;

Thompson's Walkabout Woomera, really sound mover. I would like him with more condition but understand he had pined while his owner was on holiday;

Lowe's Mancot Ptolemy, blue with lots of quality, well muscled, good second thigh. Needs to flatten in topline a little . Best blue;

Selway's Ballagan Loch Loyal, br/w, right size for a dog and quite masculine enough, beautifully muscled, great quality, good spring of rib, lovely head and neck. It is sad that that there are not more dogs of this size with his substance. BOS.

Ussher's Iniskhelltr Bewitched, breathtaking brindle, lovely racy outline 'but I well let down nevertheless. Moved better than many of her elders. One I would dearly like to take home;

Anderson's Tweseldown Doublet, lovely fawn puppy, very feminine. lovely neck and shoulders, good hock placement, moved with drive;

Thompson 's Walkabout Woodbine, glamorous cream puppy, different in type from many I put up in that she is more solid and compact. Moved faultlessly as did all exhibits from this kennel. Best puppy;

Harrison 's Whispers Sunny Future, a hair's breadth separated her from 1. I just preferred the head of winner. Really beautiful red fawn, stands over a lot of ground, moves with great drive from the hocks;

Lowe's Nimrodel Belladonna, lovely rangy blue. I noticed that all the blue exhibits I admired most were by the same sire;

Brookes's Party Girl of Allways, I really loved this red fawn, in lovely coat and condition, nice deep body, good strong quarters, well developed second thigh, lovely head and neck, moved with confidence. Limit bitch was the most marvellous class.

All beautiful bitches.

Selby 's Selbrook Bracelet, fawn I have reported on before. I have never seen her move so well, really tried and kept it up for the challenge for BIS. Very feminine, right size, lovely layback of shoulders and tuck up of loin;

Nimrodel Wintersweet, cream fawn, unlucky to meet above. Full of quality but without quite the maturity of Bracelet. Movement a little unsettled today;

Meek's Poltesco Pretty Maid, adorable red fawn with white trim. So feminine and of a type I admire immensely;

Anderson's Tweseldown Glentepknot, was BIS. Red fawn with white blaze. Too well-known to need my comments. The final decision was a very difficult one, but I just preferred the outline of Bracelet;

Mancot Bonny Kate. outstanding fawn, good head, neck and shoulder placement. Just scored in loin over Wintersweet;

Walton's Ringdove Gay Vagabond, lovely brindle dog, very sound mover. I would like a little more neck:

Skelley's Ringmore Linnet, f/w, stood over a lot of ground, good mover, in excellent coat; Smith's Nimrodel Bergamot. blue bitch, looks lovely standing but front movement needs improvement;

Francis' Franciscan Polyanthus. tall cream bitch, well muscled up toe 15 months. Really looks as if she can go. I felt her size was not important in the racing coursing class.

I think the dog in that photo is Tantivvey (sp?) Diver who became T. Diver of Pennyworth when he was exported to the US.

Is the lady with the whippets on the leashes in the 2nd photo Mrs. Poppy Martin?

What great pics, have enjoyed looking at the website as well. :thumbsup:

Loved this lady's whippets, and now I know that this was Lady Selway I realise why - they are related to these two - Zephyr's Mum and Grandma, Ballagan Happy Thought and Ballagan Happiness :wub: :wub:

And the show review had to be written between in the very early part of 1970 -- Jan./Feb because Pimlico of Crawshaw -- who did go on to be made up as an Eng.Ch.- and who was less than a year at this show, was born 4 Feb. 1969.

Gosh Dawn where did you find this super link? very interesting :cheers:

Perhaps you should consider setting up something similar ;) I am sure that there is alot of information & pictures still easily available out there for you to source from. And quite a few who would contribute to it and help. :))

Would be interesting :thumbsup:

Can't argue with that, but I would put it in 1969 (presumably after 4th August if Pimlico was old enough to show), because Ringmore Linnet was still in my mother's name. My parents moved to Scotland in November 1968, and Linnet was one of the whippets left with my Grandmother. They only took 4 whippets with them (new house, new-ish baby :b etc etc!!) I'm not sure whan my grandmother transferred the others to her name, but I'm sure she did at some point.

Edited to say that at that time the Whippet Club would have been too far for Mum to travel, unlike today when in her 70s she does that distance several times a year!!!

We think it may have been either Joanna russell or maybe mary rigby and was 1969. Just trying to rind the records, found it deffinately JOANNA RUSSELL.

The show was on 24th January 1970, this is before I was born but only just.

oh you have started mum looking through some old pics, critiques etc.

Slightly off topic but I've just come across old prize cards from my showing days with my Beagles. Here is a 3rd prize card for one of my puppy's at a Sanction Show.

A note on the back says there were 36 puppies entered so the class was split into 2.

Note who the judge was :- "

And note the year...I am sure I am not old enough to have been showing then :teehee:

Zulu's Black Diamond was born 25th june 1969 therefore was only 7 months when he won best black. :thumbsup:
