Hi out there!

Has anyone taken their lurchers pups to ringcraft at all, if so is there anything around Bristol area that anyone might know of?

Hi, i have put all of my dogs through puppy training and two have been through the basic ringcraft class. Unfortunately, ringcraft are usually run by the Kennel Club or a subsidary of the same and pedigree people and loathed to accept cross breeds. Fortunately, my lurchers were accepted at my local class, but my staffie got asked to leave !!! :angry:

I went to Chard in Somerset, but i don't know of anything in Bristol - on the Staffie club.

Would definately recommend going to some form of puppy class as the socialistation aspect is so important.

lurchers certainly benefit from socialising and ringcraft will do no harm BUT i don't want to see a lot of lurchers trotting round the ring They are better judged at a walk. Please guys lets not go down trhe pedigree sighthound route with lurchers it will ruin them.

i used to take mouse to ring craft ,as she was a young pup in the winter, so needed socializing and i,m not into obediance training .she was accepted ok ,lol the kennel club website has probably got a list of clubs

yes thought that might annoy people but don't want to start a row I just want lurchers to maintain their functionality and not become mere ornanments of course not all pedigree sighthounds are pure ornaments but some are becoming exagerrated and look to be losing functionality.

I have seen a lurcher show and I enjoy them in a light hearted way, but the ones i have been to recently are getting more like pedigree shows with the way people present their dogs getting them to stand unnaturally for example hence my comments above.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I am not overly worried BUT remember all nearly the dog breeds that have been ruined largely to confirm to an erroneous or misinterpreted show standard were once healthy functional types I just don't want to see the lurcher going the same way as it is one of the few unruined dogs left.

I didnt mean my query to cause agravation, but i do understand what is being said!, I would like to have a go at showing and seems to have a changed alot since I last did it 20 odd years ago!! I dont want to work my dog in the field but do want to work him in agility and may have a bash in the local obedience ring as well as well as a bit if racing and sim. As my dog is a 1st crossing of border/greyhound i think i could put him to what i like and would be able to do the job asked, as did my first collie/greyhound he was brill and extremely bright.

Thanks for the advice, I have called Overhills and yes they were very friendly but too far for me as they are the other side of bristol from me, I really need somewhere more nearer, but thanks anyway for the sugestion :thumbsup:

Maybe so, but if you are mixing in circles where the dogs are 'doing the do', so to say, you will surley have access to the right type of dog for the job, because after all we can all generalise and 'talk the talk' but at the end of the day, we are ultimately responsible for our own dogs and what those so said dogs do?
