Saluki Cross Bleeding In Her Wee After Being Off Lead

After walking my Saluki cross off lead at the weekend we returned hope and after an hour let the dogs out into the garden for a wee, I always stand at the door to keep an eye when i noticed Angel when she had finished weeing well it was a dark red colour (blood).

To cut along story short i have been to the vets and they can't find anything wrong with her and have checked her wee sample and as a precaution have put her on some anti-biotics. Angel is a fit 3yr old rescue 95% Saluki with a touch of whippet throw in we think.

but i have read somewhere about this condition and was wondering if anyone had any thought on this.

is there blood every time she is doing a wee or just now and again,you did the right thing going to the vets,there is a few possible causes but i really cant see it being any of them as vet should of notice,give her a few days just to see if it clears.Has she been spayed and how long ago was she done.Hope she is ok soon.

Thanks or replying nighthawk Angel has been spayed about 2yrs ago. the bleeding was only the first wee after a good off lead run about, shes a bit of a mad hatter and had run around like a loon for the full 2hrs we were out, she is a very fit dog and never seems to tire. Last yr we went through the same thing with her but it seemed to settle down. It only happens after a long off lead run about.

Was this a one-off or has she continued to bleed? Also is she spayed?

The most common cause of blood in urine is a simple bladder infection which would hopefully be sorted out by the antibiotics, but usually the amount of blood is relatively small so the urine has a pink tinge.

However it sounds as though your girl was showing dark/red blood, is that right? That would tend to indicate that the blood is coming from somewhere in the reproductive tract rather than from the bladder. If she's not spayed then an open pyometra (infection of the uterus) would be a possible cause, though I imagine that's one of the first things the vet would have looked for - but if she starts to seem ill or uncomfortable at all then best get her back to the vet sooner rather than later, as it is a serious condition.

If she is spayed then is is rare but possible that a bit of ovarian tissue was left behind so she is still experiencing a 'season', but you would see other signs like a swollen vulva and probably male dogs showing an interest.

Really hope she's OK - fingers crossed that it was just a mild infection and all is well now :luck:

ETA - sorry, I posted at the same time as you, so you have answered my questions in your post! If this was a one-off and she's otherwise well then it hopefully doesn't sound as though it's anything serious.

I seem to remember that it happens in horses and Greyhounds when they have run themselves to exhaustion- it's called azoturia or something?

May be mistaken, but off to look it up now :blink:

Just had a look online, and it's called HEMATURIA - there are lots of articles about exercise- induced hematuria in humans, and a few about dogs.

Hope this helps- like I said, I might be wrong but I was sure I had heard of it before.

After speaking to another vet who treats greyhounds she said it sounds like she is tying-up and has suggested a supplement (which for the life of me i can't remember the name) which should sort her out.
