Well we managed to survive Friday 13th ok so off we went this afternoon for a lovely walk in the woods at Etherow Park. we'd been walking for about 30 minutes when Scrumpy vanished (not for the first time) after something small & furry probably. After a few minutes I gave her a whistle, she normally comes flying back straight away but this time I had to call her a few times before she came running back down the path. I could see she was limping but when she got closer we could see she was bleeding from her right shoulder/elbow/top of leg.

We think she may have got caught on barbed wire or something similar & possibly struggled to free herself when she heard me calling. Or she could have just caught herself on it when charging past at high speed :(

She has peeled a big flap of skin right back off her elbow.

We were about 30 mins walk from where we'd left the van so had to walk all that way back, i carried her some of the time but she got a bit heavy after a while, all 13kg of her.

Then it took another half hour to get to the emergency vet, cos my regular one was shut .

Scrumpy was soooo brave & only squeaked a few times as the vet put 12  staples into her.

So we just have to hope it heals well & quickly. She keeps licking it so to add insult to injury she's having to wear a lampshade too.

At £154 it was an expensive walk (w00t) Luckily all but £80 will be covered by the insurance.

We have to go to our own vet on Tues to get it checked but hopefully the staples will come out in a week.

Poor Scrumpy

arr bless her :( hope she gets better soon  Julie

Awww, bless

What a brave girl, to have all those staples without a GA

It does look like wire damage :( Fricking stuff

Get better soon, Scrumpy :luck: :luck:

Poor baby looks so sore I would have screamed the place down not just wimpered a bit :huggles: :huggles:

Awww, all the bruising is coming out now, it's going a nice shade of purple.

She is fast asleep so I've taken her lampshade off but it'll have to go back on during the night in case she start licking it. Guess who won't be getting much sleep tonight? Me... as i'll keep waking up to check she's not got the shade off -_- -_-

I've given her some arnica to help with the bruising and she has some AB's from tomorrow.

Bloody barbed wire, it should be banned  Although she's got off lightly as the muscle underneath hasn't been damaged.

She's just woken up & walked across the room & she seems ever so stiff on that leg, poor Scrumpy, she's going to be very sore tomorrow :'(

Ooooh poor little girl she has been brave I Lost my beloved 16 year old lurcher last year and whenever I took her to the vets I used to say that she was such a wimp and he used to say she's not a wimp she's a hound! Apparently they don't have the endomorphins to block pain that other dogs do. I now have a three quarter Deerhound one quarter Greyhound bitch pup and a pedigree Borzoi male pup. You haven't heard anything compared to the noise a Borzoi makes when they have slightly hurt themselves they just stand still with the injured leg raised and make the most terrible noise so you think they have at the very least broken it ,but 2 mins later having been smothered with kisses they walk off and aren't even limping

Just a word of caution about the Arnica, although it's fantastic for bumps, breaks , knocks and bruising it should never be applied to an open wound. Scrumpy is absolutely gorgeous and I hope she has a speedy recovery and I hope you don't lose too much sleep

best wishes

Judy

Awww poor Scrumpy that a nasty looking wound! She'll be fine and back chasing the furries soon Im sure :)

Poor Scrumpy, that looks very sore. Hope she feels better soon. :luck: :luck:

aww por Scrumps, she looks so sad, and to add further insult she's had to have a baldy patch of her lovely fur shaved off !

Hope she's soon feeling much better and that it heals well for her.

Poor Scrumpy , get well soon :flowers:

She is such a beautiful girl and I just love her name

Scrumpy says thanks everyone, she has slept for most of today & doesn't seem too bothered about her stapled up leg. She has tried to lick it a few times but other than that it doesn't seem to be troubling her :)

She had the lampshade on during the night & was really good & it stayed on all night.

Judy, I've given her the homeopathic pillules not the arnica cream ;) but thanks.

When i took her to my own vet a few months ago when she kept vomiting he gave her an injection & said it would sting her "& being a lurcher she will probably scream the place down" so he knows how wimpy they can be.

I'm not looking forward to watching all those staples being taken out again :(

Aw, poor Scrumpy - that looks sore :huggles: If the collar really bothers her you could try a child's T shirt instead to keep her from licking at the wound. Sending lots of healing thoughts her way :huggles:

Owch! :(

Hope Scrumpy is ok (fantastic name btw)... Barbed wire is nasty stuff!

Poor Scrumpy ... I do hope she's feeling a bit better today.

Annie

One week on and apart from being a bit stir crazy Scrumpy is fine, thanks Sue :)

She isn't liking not being able to go off lead especially when the others are all running around.

She is due at the vets on Tuesday to hopefully have the staples taken out. I just know she is going to create something awful when they come out :sweating: She's not a very good patient & will be a nervous wreck just going in.

this is her wound today, she is still wearing a Tshirt and is trying to lick the scab now so it's probably itching as it's healing up.

I can't wait for her to be better & be able to have a run around again, she'll be like a bullet out of a gun when she finally gets to run.
