hello,

the vet recommended them for charlie and dylan to try an mellow them a bit and also to help over fire works nite, as they get very stressed, they seem to be working already, has anyone else used them before and what are your thoughts?

Hi Jon,

We used them some years ago on a nervous Boxer and it made her even more agitated and hyper . Years later I tried it on my male Shiba who is very nervous of loud noises like fireworks and clay pigeon shooting and I got the same results as with the Boxer . As it built up in his system he got all jumpy about anything and everything .

A friend of mine used a DAB diffuser last year around Fireworks time with great results and I'm going to try it this year for my Lad .

oh right... how long did it take for them to become hyper? did it calm them before hand? and whats a DABS diffuser?

We used it on a GSD that was hyper all the time nothing would calm him down no matter what you did .He was fed the lowest protien available at the time as it was some years agoand was walked miles every day and free run .Some one reccomended using sculcap and valerian with him but despite thefact he had the dose upped to nealy twice the reccomended dose (we were advised by the manufacturer) it had absolutely no effect on him what so ever

As I work for Dorwest I guess I better respond!

This is an extremely, extremely rare response to Scullcap & Valerian. They are used and recomended by about 25% of all vets in the country as they are one of only 2 licensed herbals for reducing nervousness and anxiety. They do not sedate just relax and calm.

Of course as with any medication there are always a very, very low percentage of cases that it doesn't suit, but I can assure you the number of phonecalls and letters we receive after bonfire night saying how well they worked is amazing!

The problem with over-excitability/nervousness/phobias is that it is not a physical medical condition and the roots behind the problem can be hard for us to always understand. For example in one situation you can use a herbal such as Scullcap & Valerian tablets on a dog that is perhaps over-excited but as the tablets help relax it can actually make the dog more confident and a bit more cocky - whereas in 99.99% of all cases when used on a hyperactive dog they calm and the dog is more controllable.

This medicine has been sold for over 40 years and I can assure you if it didn't work in the majority of all cases I am sure it wouldn't still be around!!

For fireworks night we recommend starting the tablets a while before to really get them into the dogs system but as the tablets can be used in one-off situations you quite possibly will see them taking effect already.

I give Peggy-Sue 2-3 tablets 2 hours before ringcraft to keep her nice and calm as she can get a bit OTT - she seems much more focused on me

On odd occasions I have used Valerian compound from Dorwest and I have found it to chill out Daisy as shes not good with loud noises and she has been much more relaxed and less uptight. However I tried it going to agility and she did indeed get more cocky about the whole thing. So for some things its brilliant :thumbsup:

I use them just to help Beau through the firework period around Nove 5th and New Years Eve. I start about a week before and they work very well with him. I keep him on them for about a two week stretch just to be on the safe side. I don't use them for anything else. :thumbsup:

It calmed my shiba the first day but from day two onwards he got more and more jumpy and agetated at the slightest thing . A friend of mine had exactly the same response when she tried it on a young Shiba bitch who was ring shy .

A DAB diffuser is a plug-in which gives off pheramones like those a bitch gives off when she is feeding her pups . It calms them down . You can get those from your vet too .

Hi, I have used this product for years on my youngsters who show signs of car sickness etc. and have found it invaluable. It certainly settles them down and calms any fears they have about the car etc. I would recommend it to anyone. :thumbsup:

We have used it for several years, especially for our collie x as she is terrified of fireworks and thunderstorms, and have found it really helpful, i do use it with rescue remedy as well sometimes. :thumbsup:

No experience using Scullcap and Valerian, but if it is like the other Dorwest products it will be fab.

Just something to keep in mind if you do try a DAP diffuser, you should be plugging it in at least a month before the event, which you are hoping to calm the dog down for. So if it is for fireworks night, you need to have plugged it in by now! :thumbsup:
