Grover has a small cyst ( about the size of a pencil rubber) under his front leg (armpit ;) ) which I'm pretty sure is a sebaceous cyst as our Afghan used to have them. I know they can be prone to them but wonder if it's always a vet job? He's not even noticed it but it is getting slightly bigger each day. The temptation is to get the gunk out, clean it and put sudocrem on it! Would this be a stupid thing to do?!

What do the rest of you do if your dogs get these cysts? What is a vet likely to do? Any advice, as always, gratefully received.

Can't give you advice on cysts (although I have had one on finger since Friday!!!) - but have used Sudocrem on Marlo (he had a slight rash under the "webbing" on his back legs...cleared it up - although they both liked licking it :x

haha, laughing at 'webbing' because I call that bit of R and G their 'webs' too. :D

What IS it called? :b

I think it must be like the backs of our knees - has no name! I also guess most other dogs don't have actual webs there because they don't stretch their legs back and forth as much as hounds have to when running so don't need the extra coverage!

I'm sticking with webs, even if I have to say it at the vets! ''Mmm, yes, he has a small cut on his rear left web, Mr Vet.'' :clown:

I normally squeeze the cysts with very clean hands. If you make sure you get the "root" as I call it out, it won't come back. If there's a bit left, it will just build up again. The stuff that comes out is amazing, just like curd cheese :x it keeps coming and coming!! Good luck

i did one on Ruby last week it clears up in 2 days i take the head of and sqeeze the much out then put warm salt water wash over it for a minet or 2 then put a dresing on with honey both my light fawns get them ruby the whippet and boris the greyhound they have maybe 1 or 2 a years each the vet showed me how to do them as he says no point in them keep coming in for them i get disposabel gloves so use them to sqeeze them

:x :x I think it might be wise to leave this until several hours after I've eaten....I feel a bit poorly now but thanks for the advice! :x

Sounds like a plan! Although you only live about 40 minutes from me so get yer gloves on and I'll pop over with Grover and you can do it haha :D

An update!

I kept looking at Grover's 'cyst' and something just wasn't right - I became less convinced that it was a sebaceous cyst as it wasn't the right colour and texture. I took him to the vets yesterday to get it checked out and she says it is probably a *cytoma (didn't catch the first bit but assume cos of his age= histiocytoma) and we could either get it removed or leave it and see. I was worried about anaesthetic but she reassured me about the types they would use and said although they could do it under sedation, GA might be better as at least he would have a breathing tube in place should anything (and she said there was very little chance anyway) go wrong. I didn't want to leave the lump there in case it turns nasty.

So on Monday morning poor Gro is going to the vets for an operation to remove his lump and we can know once and for all what it is :( He might not need a 'lampshade' as it is on the back of his right front leg where he can't really reach. Poor Roscoe will not know what to do with himself without his buddy all day.

Will let you know how he gets on and do some 'before and after' pics for the more gruesome and curious among you!

Good luck for Monday :luck:

Poor little chap ....... I hate taking mine to the vet, I always feel so guilty :(

Sox is at the vet right now, being stitched up. Yet another fight over a bone

Hope it all goes as well as can be hoped and isn't anything serious. :luck:
