Hi, should you ever give a dog gravy made from granuals such as Bisto so they will eat their dry food. Thanks for any answers

Too salty I would imagine - if you want to add something, try a spoonful of canned tuna in spring water, or pilchards in tomato. Mine eat mostly raw, but sometimes have dry with the above added for interest.

You could also add a spoon of canned dog food like butchers tripe- or wet trays like wainwrights.

Are they underweight or just fussy/ fed up with their dry food? If they are just fussy and you want to feed a particular dry food for a reason then it is worth putting the food down twice a day for 10 mins each time and removing it without comment if your dog wont eat. Eventually they will eat the food if you dont offer scraps or human food in between.

Out of curiosity, what are you feeding ?

We are feeding a dry food our vet recommended because our dog has sensitive skin, I can't remember the name my son has the name in his wallet but he is out lol. He has always been fed dried food because his previous owner fed him on it but he can leave it for days without bothering with it. He is a Lab Retriever who has plenty of exercise, we feed him treats for training purposes, just want to do the best by him, he loves having gravy on his food but have only done it a couple of times, may try the pilchards. Thank you for your reply, very much appreciated

kaytee id also say gravy would carry a wee bit of salt but if you do make it weak and not everyday, also try some sardines in tom sauce but yet again dont over do it, and yes also pilchards, best of luck,

Yes, gravy granules are way too salty to be fed on a regular basis, but I'll tell you an easy and cheap way of making gravy that they can have- use home made meat stock.

If you have a chicken for lunch on a Sunday, put all of the bones and leftover scraps in a big pan, cover them with hot water and simmer them for an hour, then strain, cool and freeze into ice cube trays (you can always tip them out of the ice cube tray into a bag after they've frozen so you can fetch out half a dozen cubes at a time to use) then you can use that meat stock all week on your dog's dinner. It's low salt, it tastes wonderful for them and it's completely natural.

Also works with all other meat bones :)

Another thing to add to his food is a little grated cheese, some natural yoghurt or a raw egg. Dogs generally love all of these.
