Its great to see sienna improving...hang in there lesley and never give up hope cos she'll be walking soon
yes it can be a shock for other people seeing her the way she is, but its lovely seeing her having love and cuddles :huggles:

when is she likely to come home or do the vet want her to get all the feeling back, cos im sure you cant wait to have her home :huggles:

my peg came home after 4 days but she could only barely stand with support and then she had 24 hr care and improved in leaps and bounds

please keep us updated

Thankyou everybody for all your well wishes :huggles:

I just never thought :clown: I should have realised that to see her looking so poorly would be a shock :( but to us she looks better and better each day so as she is now although heartbreaking is a wonderful improvement, and I wanted to share it with everyone who is spurring her on :huggles: I forget that people didnt see her as she was in the couple of days after the accident, they just know sienna as she was healthy and fit.

She will be in until at least Wednesday and depending on how she is the vet will let us know, he is happy for dogs to be at home with their owners he believes its good for them but she needs medical care because of the meds she has to have, she's been on a drip until day before yesterday, then all the meds to manage her pain which are getting less, he told us that the pain she would have had at first with that sort of injury is about as bad as it can get, and she was having methadone and diazapam every few hours  which kept her pain free but very drowsy, they have cut down to a lower dose of morphine now and diazapam which stop her muscles in her neck from tensing, plus some other stuff which I can't remember  she also has to be turned every hour or so so her lungs don't clog up, she has physio twice a day.

I can write about it now she is getting better it was too hard before :( but when she went in she was a scale 4/5 worst, which was- could be permanent and at best likelyhood of needing an op :(

She is now a scale 3 which is still serious but more positive, nothing is garaunteed but the vet is very happy with her progress and says it will take a long time but he is confident of a good outcome for her :)

So she's come a really long way on those pics so feel happy not sad :) :huggles:

Don't stop updating us Lesley - even if we are a load of blubbering wrecks  Its only cos we care and to be honest it is such a shock for something like this to happen that we all realise that it could have been any one of our babies rather than Sienna, it's frightening to see how a little incedent can cause such problems.

All thinking about you lots and really appreciate your regular updates Thank you :huggles:

thank you - thats exactly how i feel - so upset to see sienna so disabled and thinking it could happen to any of our dogs at any time.

i think shes incredible putting up such a fight and you lesley are great being so strong and positive to help her get over this.

i am an emotional person but have been a vet nurse for many years and seen many injured animals - they just get on with things - they do not feel sorry for themselves like we do !

so - go sienna show us you can do it girlie - sending love

abbie

So glad Sienna is improving

Stay strong and we send our love and whippy hugs from Eric too :huggles: :huggles:

Thanks for the explaination and update Lesley - so good to hear that she continues to make little steps in the right direction - loads of prayers and positive thoughts are always here for Sienna :huggles:

Sienna will be cheered up with your visits, she knows she is loved and that you are doing your best for her.

Sending lots of positive vibes your way. I know it is not easy from when Tarka was recovering earlier this year. But these whippets surprise you and have an inner strength that is quite amazing at times.

:huggles:

aww poor baby, but as you explain she's making great improvement and it may take time but hearing of other whippet recovery helps to keep up the spirits. You must be so proud of her, if love alone can heal her, it'll work :luck: :luck:

That's the best news yet! She has come such a long way and really in so short a space of time. It must seem life forever for you though Lesley. :huggles: :huggles: My thoughts are with you and Andy & Jordan. :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

When Rocket had his accident a couple of years ago he was 4/5 in severity as a disc had erupted in his back...We had to have him operated on and then began the hard work of Physio and hydrotherapy and swimming.....The physio we had was great and every day for half hour in morning and half hour in afternoon we did the exercises....To strengthen the legs we had two small stairs before the main starcase I would put treats and entice Rocket up at first I thought this wont work as he stood just looking at the treats but he he soon got the hang of going up the two streps,,,,Then the physio said if he likes sitting on the settee dont lift him up or he will expect that but encourage him up...It was amazing how he has improved he now chases rabbits and squirrels at an angle but he has good quality of life ....I hope this will give you encouragement and Sienna willl pull through but it does take time..But every step Sienna makes is a step forward...I did keep a weekly log and anything Rocket did that was improvement I put in it and that helped to look back and read it....

Lovely to see her Lesley, you are right, she certainly does look happier. That breeding seem to be very expressive in their eyes ( I have 2 Jason daughters). Tell Sienna that she has new nieces and nephews here that are sending her the warmest of wishes. They say there legs are wobbly too but they bet Sienna will be up and about again in the future. Keep a diary of her progress, then you will be able to look back and see how far she has come already. Warmest wishes. Juley :huggles:

When my borzoi wishie ( who is now 4 years old) was 8 months old he developed a lump on his head.

he became litsless over time and an mri scan showed up a huge tumour growing on his skull both upwards and down onto his brain.

...long story short he had massive surgery which involved removing a large section of his skull. he was in a hospital 4 hours away from me for a week and there was a huge chance that he would not survive the op itself never mind the recovery period........

needless to say it was a hugely traumatic time for me and i had to hand him over not knowing if i would ever see him again.

The surgeon was fanstastic though, even admitted although he had not done the op itself before but it was a success in america - covering the skull with muscle was enough to protect the brain and he was optimistic - i ha dno choice - if i left the tumour there he wouldnt have long.

The good news is he is here with me now and a wonderful wonderful happy animal

so lesley i know how hard this road is for you with siennas recovery

wishie send his regards

That is so reassuring to hear, Wishie is so beautiful(in a manly way of course :D )  it is heartbreaking to see them poorly and you feel so helpless but they keep you strong by trying their best to get well :huggles:

Sienna is doing well I didnt see her yesterday but the nurse rang me in the morning to tell me she is doing brilliantley, he hasn't seen her since Thursday and he could see a big change from then, she is getting a little stronger but her right side is still letting her down, she has nothing in her front leg and I am just hoping that will change over time, because initially her whole body was like that, they are propping her up with cushions so she can lay in a better position to see whats going on and eat and drink, she can shift herself about a bit if she's not comfy.

It was the night nurses last shift last night she has been with Sienna throughout and she said she is really going to miss her she said they rarely get sighthounds in because they dont suffer from the orthapedic ailments others do.

Her medication is now in tablet form with only pain relief via shringe on standby should she need it so that is good if we can bring her home in the near future :D

:) Its fantastic that Sienna is getting a little better every day :huggles: :luck:

we cry because we all have the fear that this could happen to us :(

and of course because you, your family and dogs are so lovely

i have been surprised and touched by what a great community K9 is, and with fear of sounding like a soppy fool - i do not know what i would do without you guys :)

please keep updating us otherwise we will all come knocking at your door, and you know how far i would have to come to get to you..... but i would (w00t)

these awful incidents that happen to these beautiful hounds are in lots of ways a huge help for the future - i for one look back often on threads for advice.

so keep us updated

or else...... :p

i will send you pictures of Mabel later - today is sheep meeting day (at last)

and she will be getting her first smell and sight of rabbits which our field is full of!

Keep on mending Sienna - you're very brave :huggles:

We're all thinking of you

Been away since Friday and this was the first post I wanted to read when we got back today.

So glad Sienna is continuing to get better with each day that passes :huggles: and that her medication is now in tablet form now

Hope you do get her home soon Lesley but where she is now sounds like a great place and with really, really good caring staff who really do care :huggles:

Thanks for the texts while I was away, it was so nice of you to keep me updated while you have all this going on, I really appreciated them :huggles: :huggles:

I'm glad to hear she's improving. I hope you get her home soon Lesley. It will do her the world of good to have the special attention you can be giving her. It will be a lot of work for you, but I know it will be a labour of love.

Her face in the first picture just melts me.

Wendy

:) So wonderful to see that she's improving day by day.

Poor little baby, and poor you too :huggles: Can't imagine how it must feel to be without her, and to leave her there all the time.

I'm sure she'll soon be back to her old self, and back in your arms at home where she belongs

Lots of love and gentle cuddles coming her way :huggles:

Emma and Jesse
