Just wondering if anyone could tell me if Mathew is an average height for his age coz he seems really tall to me! He is 5months old currently and 19ins at the shoulder. (he grew 2ins in the last month!!LOL). From the breed standard it seems he will reach what should be max height in a couple of months or does their growth rate slow down alot?

So just a big whippie(his mum was huge too) or a little bit of greyhound in there somewhere?

Wondering if he will continue to fit through the dog flap!!

thanks

Some stop growing at 6 months, others still grow on up till 11 or 12 months...depends on the line.

Lets hope he stops soon :D but if his Mum was from large lines he is likely to be a big chap

My two are seven months now and seem small - which is fine , both parents were under 19". Where do you measure to? I mean where is the shoulder?

Sorry for being stoopid

Someone told me that a good rule of thumb is that, at six months, a dog's height from its 'elbow' to the ground doubled will be it's final height. Not sure if this works for whippets but it would be interesting to find out.

Mine are nearly eight months old and 22 inches at the shoulder (I stood Grover against a bookcase and put a ruler across his 'withers' (sorry more used to horses!) to make a mark and measured that. Their Dad was 21 and a half and Mum only a tiny bit smaller so it's what I expected. I'm really glad they are this size as I'm used to big dogs ( had collies/ afghan/ weimaraner when growing up) and don't intend to show them. I did worry for a bit that they were whippet freaks :D as I only saw smaller ones around but have seen some since that are the same size so feel better now! Still think they could have a bit more growing to do!

I met a lady in the park at the weekend who had a couple of beddies, who took one look at their size and said 'Are they Laguna whippets?' :) Spot on, they do have Laguna on their sire's side - does yours?

Shoulders are withers, same thing.

22 eek.

Laguna whips aren't normally big.

On our walks we get:

look Greyhounds

Oh those dogs are skinny.

I would love to just reply no they are Whippets & you don't see a fat athelete is Kelly Holmes fat? but I tend to try to ignore the comments(unless they are 'those are nice dogs').

Yep we have lots of knowledgable types smugly telling their friends that 'those dogs are greyhounds'. If people say they are skinny (usually kids to be fair) I tell them they are like race horses and fast cars - have to be streamlined. ;)

I blame Sooty Sam for making my dogs big.

So its a wait and see kinda thing!!

I dont know what his breeding is, was never that curious......until now! ;) I will have to e mail his breeder to find out.

Id like him to be a nice big dog even if it means I get squished during cuddle sessions, just hoping it doesnt make the chihuahua too jealous!!LOL

To measure your whippets height measure from the middle of their shoulders, to the floor. refer pic
