Monty is now 5 months old. He's about 16" tall and weighs 6.7 kilos.

I have a feeling he's a bit small and thin for his age but I cant be sure since he's my first whippet :unsure: . Does it sound normal to you?

All dogs are different...he might have a growth spurt or two yet and supprise you (w00t)

Dippy's 14 weeks old and stands at 14 1/2 inchs and is 7.12 kilos.

I think it does sound small but personally I love the little ones. :wub: Do you think it matters if he's small? I suppose if you were planning on showing him then maybe, but otherwise as long as he is healthy it probably doesn't matter. Can you show us a pic. Send him to me, I would fill my house with itsy bitsy ones if I could.

I definitely don't mind him being small. It's much more comfortable having a small whippet on your lap :wub: .

The thing is that since the beginning Monty has a sensitive stomach and we had to change his food quite a few times which causes more problems (diarrhea) so my concern is that he might not be getting enough nutrients and that it could damage his development. Other than that he's very happy and full of energy. The vet doesn't seem to be concerned but quite honestly, I don't think he really cares.

I will try to post an up to date picture tomorrow.

If he seems happy and full of energy, and his eyes are bright, his coat is in good nick and his pooh is normal, I dont think you need worry. He sounds lovely and he may stay little or suddenly catch up when puberty hits him!

Aww ! He sounds really cute, I like the little whippies, ours is age 1, 18 " to shoulder and she's under 20 lb ( and is a fussy eater :- " ) he'll fill out some more

I only keep girls, and they seem to do most of their rapid growing by the time they are 6 months old. Boys may take bit longer??? I would have to see him to judge if he is too skinny, but i like my pups to be on slim side, the fill up once they finnish growing.

Hi Shany, Monty looks fine to me in his 4 month pics, wouldnt have thought he was too skinny in them at all. Has he dropped off a bit since then? Think as long as hes well wormed & you find some food that he likes and can tolerate youll soon see a few growth spurts, tho dont forget the sweetest things come in the smallest packages

What also concerns me is that the only food he tolerates at the moment is an adult food so I'm not really sure if he gets all he needs from it. Also, it's hard to figure out how much exactly to give him as the guidelines on the bag are for an adult dog. (he would eat the whole bag if he could! :x )

He looks pretty strong boy to me. :thumbsup: But I would give him all the food he would eat at this moment. I would only restrict his food intake if he starts to look too fat. Good condition is if you only just can see hint of his pin bones. When fully grown you should also see 3 of his vertabraes. :luck:

You've posted an interesting question about the adult food, I've often wondered if it has the right sort of mix for a puppy (enough protein?) so I'll be interested to read the answers you get :thumbsup:

Rileys 16" at 5mths too, he is a lot smaller then milo was at that age, but Whippets do come in somany different sizes (Milo is just over 21" now).

Monty looks :wub: and very healthy, he looks a little o too!

A suggestion about the adult food - I don't know about weather it got enough protein etc for puppies but if you stick to the recommend amount for small//toy dogs at this stage, it maybe all right?

I take it we are talking about complete food here. I wouldn't worry unduly that it is designed for adults, as long as he is eating something and it agrees with his digestion, that is the main thing. I am not an advocate of complete so mine are fed raw meat from when they are weaned and therefore have exactly the same as the adults anyway.

Personally I would like to see more weight on him but I like my puppies podgy as I think that gives them something to fall back on should they pick up a bug and have an upset stomach. It is much easier to slim them down when adult than it is to try and build up a picky eater!

I have a puppy of 10 months who has always had a 'dicky' tummy and is the world's fussiest eater. I now have him on Purina Pro Plan puppy which he eats with tripe as his lunchtime feed and I cook him a piece of fish for his last feed which he with the dry food at bed time. (He still likes Bakers complete puppy for his breakfast). His tummy can tolerate this no probs. I have also been giving him a couple of charcoal bonios which have also improved his poos. Having a fussy eater was a real shock because I have 2 other whippets that lick the pattern off the dish at every meal!

Yes tripe is probably best for weight gain & mine always loved tinned tuna & cooked chicken which added extra protein in a tasty way. Heard that scrambled eggs are also a useful protein booster, praps some others might have some ideas about this? Obviously remember that any sudden dietry changes can cause tummy upsets anyway so always introduce new stuff gradually. Looks from the pics tho Shany that Monty is having one of those growth spurts mentioned earlier. Hes got that gangly look about him that growing boy dogs so often get, its just a matter of time before all his bits catch up with each other! Have you found somewhere to give him a good run yet? The more excercise he gets, the quicker his muscle tone will build. I really wouldnt worry too much tho, he looks as tho hes coming on just fine, just think of him as a typical teenager & be grateful he cant answer you back. :luck: :luck: with him Shany I think hes lovely.
