Why is it always at night when the vets are shut :russian_roulette:

Solly has just come in from the garden with about a half inch rectangle of flesh missing off his shoulder blade. It is quite squidgy and makes a horrible noise when pushed so I think it is probably a pucture wound - again !!!! I have bathed with warm hibiscrub water and tried to flush the wound to make sure there is nothing in there, and then I have smeared some antibiotic cream into it. They off to the vets tomorrow morning as I am sure they will want to staple it. I think he is getting used to hurting himself, he doesn't seem to be bothered by it and isn't crying or shivering.

What would you do? If he starts to shiver later on I have some Metacam, would you give him a dose or wait until the vets in the morning? As I say, at the moment he seems fine.

Opinions always gratefully received. :cheers:

can't you get hold of an emergancy vet? Poor Soloman hope he is ok and let us know how he gets on at vet.. :luck: :luck: :huggles:

Its not that bad I don't think. It isn't bleeding now, just weeping so I am sure he will be fine til the morning. Luckily I have quite an extensive first aid kit so at least I know it is clean. I am not brilliant at gorey things though - so needless to say I am apparently on a diet tonight

your vet would say so long as your dog is ok in himself and not bleeding profusely(?) then not to worry and take him in in the morning - i always use rescue remedy for shock - its brilliant - dont use metacam unnecessarily.

you have done all the right things using hibiscrub

keep him warm and keep an eye on him for any further signs setting in but sounds like its not too serious - if your squeamish a little blood lcan look worse than it is at this time of night.there would always be a vet at the end of the phone to reassure you though.

Think we're going to have to start calling him a self-harmer (w00t)

I have a horse in that category - whenever he's out in the field he makes a point of cutting or bruising himself :angry:

Animal lady you have made me feel better, I haven't given any Metacam as he actually seems fine. He has slept since I last posted and I have just let him into the garden for a pee and he has shot off after something at the bottom of the garden, and then straight up the stairs to bed!!! It looks like it is drying up a bit too, so fingers crossed its not too deep. I hate to bother the vets unless I really have to at this time of night. I always take emergency to mean life threatening!!

I agree with you JinnyFizz - self-harmer or maybe attention seeker He should know by now he is precious enough, he doesn't have to keep proving it

PS: JinnyFizz I know what you mean about accident prone horses, my last boy was 18.3hh and always getting into trouble. My vets loved him, unfortunately my insurance didn't. My present lad is proving to be a colicitus soul so again I get to see a lot of my vet!!

18.3hh (w00t) (w00t) Bloomin' 'ell .... I have to use a mounting block to get on mine and he's only 16.1 (my legs only get up to 14.2 :lol: )

Mmmm it did prove a little difficult at competitions. At home the yard owner had built a most excellent mounting block that was about 3' tall. He was a lamb though, I miss him every day. He was put down last Xmas Eve with a heart condition. He had been retired in the spring with sudden and severe joint disease. He was only 10

My new boy is 17.1hh so a bit less obscenly huge ! I am quite tall though I have to say so need a larger horse.

You are lucky being shorter, it means you have more choice and look good on any size horse :thumbsup:

Poor Solly. They heal very quickly - Murphy had a chunk taken out of his shoulder by a dog who nipped him - he recovered in a week. Hope the same goes for Solly.

Well we have just got back from the vets and I am very proud of my little boy. He was sooo brave. The vet had a good look and then stuck her little finger into it. The hole luckily didn't go straight in, so much as along under the flesh - pretty yukey though :bad: After having a good look she said that really she would want to give him a general and get it all tidied up - BUT after all the generals the poor soul has had within the last couple of months, this was not really an option. She took him into the theatre area, shaved off the hair, cut off the loose skin and stapled it up with 6 staples. He was so brave. At least he was able to come straight home with me again - he was sooooo relieved. So the little monkey has his house coat on to protect it. He is soooo not bothered by it and is flying round the house, after being told to keep him quiet for a couple of days !! Still at least he is OK. Just hope that is it for vets visits for a while.

Claire - have you got Arnica pillules in your First Aid kit? That would have been good to give him last night for pain and bruising after the incident and every couple of hours for the next few hours

If it's the sugary pillules, you give 2 right away, then every couple of hours for about 6 doses, then 4 times daily. You don't need to give that much. That's the instructions on the package and that's what I've done both for the dogs and for myself personally. I've used both the 6c strength and the 30c strength depending on the injury or pain.

I can tell you from personal experience after a frightened dog accidentally caught my face in a panic snap, that the effect of them is almost immediate!
