Hi everyone

I'm just writing to try and find out when other peoples whippet bitches had their first seasons. Daisy will be two on the 7th of February (she is nearly 20 months old) and she has still not had a season yet. I was just wondering if this was normal. We are intending to get her spayed after her first season (although it does seem a shame - who can resist puppies? :b ) but i was just wondering if it was normal for a bitch to have her first season as late as this. I know other dog breeds generally have their 1st season before their first birthday or just afterwards, but i'm sure i heard somewhere that greyhounds can be as late as two years old. Does the same apply to whippets? Or do you think there's something wrong with Daisy? Should we just get her spayed now anyway? Your advice would be great.

thanks :)

i have a bitch here she is 2 next month and she has only just had her first season

another bitch ii had didnt have 1 til she was over 3 and was then in pup with an accidental mating as her season was dry and silent

The latest any of my whippet bitches have come in season is Amber and she was 15 months when she came into season. But you are right about greyhounds my ex racer Button was 2 1/5 when she had her first season and my William's half sister didn't have her first season until she was 4 years old.

Connie had her first season at 9 months and her second exactly 6 months after the first but I think that 9 months is young for a first season.

Our two adult girls came in at 9 months (Connie aboves Mummy) and Ruby had her first at 12 months.

It is not unheard of with whippets to be almost two before their first season and occasionally older.

Edited to add - do wait til she has had her first season before getting her spayed. :)

Grace's first season was at 15 months. There does seem to be a lot of variation, doesn't there?

Daisy is gorgeous she looks a lot like my Pearl  all mine have had theirs by 12 months but I know quite a few who have been 2 years plus so I wouldn't worry too much it will come

My whippet Hula first came in season when she was 22 months .

Whippets do seem to be funny like this - I got my bitch when she was already 4 years old. There was 18 months between her last season and the one before and I had so many arguments with people telling me it would be every 6 months. However, she had a normal season and, when she was spayed, the vet said that she was having a bit of a false pregnancy.

It will happen soon enough I'm sure!! Good luck :luck:

Well here's an update on this very old thread.

Today, at the age of 32 months and 10 days, Daisy finally came into season for the first time. :sweating:

However it's not an ideal time as we're looking after our friend's entire male Tibetan terrier until Tuesday. So he's been in the hallway all day, while Daisy's been stuck in the kitchen with a pair of age 2-3 pants on to keep things clean. (thankfully it's very light just now)

If it hadn't been for that disgusting TT sniffing about her for the last couple of days and licking you where :x this morning we probably would never have noticed. She's also a lot clingier that normal, less tolerant with other dogs (especially the pesky entire males (and bitches!) who've been showing an increased interest in her in the last couple of days) and she's quite sleepy.

So any whippet owners who have a bitch over 2 who has not had a season; rest assured it does come eventually!

Have to agree with you , Daisy is the cutest

haha thank you :D

ETA: we're all just really glad she has finally had a season - despite it taking about 5 times longer than most dogs :teehee:

We were starting to worry there was something wrong with her so it's a relief :)
