To spay or not is a very emotive subject, and there have been many forum discussions about it since I have been a member. :- I do think a bitch should have had a season and be allowed to mature, so I don't agree with spaying very young.

I worked for a vet many years ago, and having witnessed the very tragic consequences of pyometras that went undetected until too late, as well as awful mammary tumours that required extensive surgery on old bitches, I am pro spaying.

Yes, vets do make money from spaying, but one has to remember that they are dealing with such a variety of dog owners (some of whom shouldn't be in charge of a hamster, let alone a dog), and won't be responsible when the bitch is in season, leading to unplanned/unwanted puppies.

When Dolly had her first season, Bobby (neutered) actually mated and tied with her.  We were a bit shocked. Luckily we were there and they were both OK, but I did worry that Dolly could have been hurt, so I was relieved when she was spayed.

There are so many dogs needing rehoming, and it would be interesting to know the statistics of the number of dogs needing rehoming related to the number of unplanned puppies.

False pregnancysNever had a bitch with a false pregnancy

Unplanned mating of bitch

This the owner NOT the unspeyed bitch

Pregnancy , complications , C-section , problems with puppies , removal of dew claws

See above

Pyometra

Never had a bitch with pyometra

Mammary tumours

Never had a bitch with mammary tumours.
Maybe I have been lucky but still cannot agree with the argument that routine speying is for the benefit of the bitch.

Speying is (almost) invariably for the benefit of the OWNER not the bitch and spurious statistics are used to justify their decision.

The decision is 'yours' and very few people will change their minds no matter how many times the arguments (both sides) on forums such as TWF.

I have only had biches all my life , never had any dogs .

Only 3 of my bitches were not spayed , 2 developed mammary tumours and one suffered from false preganancys .

Maybe I was just unlucky :(

Must agree with Dawn here

and fortunatley the original poster is a very responsible owner and good judge of dogs ;)

I have had one with mammery tumours ( Mayzee) but they were caught and dealt with as soon as they were spotted and Mayzee lived another 8 years after .

If you check your bitches regulary for any lumps and bumps ( as we do ourselves ) then they can be easily dealt with IMO

We are never agree about this highly immotive subject ,

The vet I work for refuses to spay or neuter dogs before 2 years of age , Many a time Ive informed potenial clients about why he wont do the op till then , and I suppose over the years he has LOST money over it .
