To spay or not is a very emotive subject, and there have been many forum discussions about it since I have been a member. :- I do think a bitch should have had a season and be allowed to mature, so I don't agree with spaying very young.
I worked for a vet many years ago, and having witnessed the very tragic consequences of pyometras that went undetected until too late, as well as awful mammary tumours that required extensive surgery on old bitches, I am pro spaying.
Yes, vets do make money from spaying, but one has to remember that they are dealing with such a variety of dog owners (some of whom shouldn't be in charge of a hamster, let alone a dog), and won't be responsible when the bitch is in season, leading to unplanned/unwanted puppies.
When Dolly had her first season, Bobby (neutered) actually mated and tied with her. We were a bit shocked. Luckily we were there and they were both OK, but I did worry that Dolly could have been hurt, so I was relieved when she was spayed.
There are so many dogs needing rehoming, and it would be interesting to know the statistics of the number of dogs needing rehoming related to the number of unplanned puppies.
