Hi,

My beautiful whippet Dylan was finally diagnosed as having a spine tumour on Thursday.I am devastated as he is only 10.He started to limp in January and was xrayed and I was told it was sciatica but over the last couple of months it has progressed to him not putting his foot down at all.He was re xrayed last week and I am told a shadow could be seen on his 7th vertebre.

Has anyone else gone through this and where do I start to help him.I don,t think any surgery could help as its not obviously possible to amputate.

Can anyone tell me what to expect.

I would love to hear from someone who has experienced similar.

Regards

Liz :(

I'm sorry to hear about dylan :( i really do hope that you can find some help for him, there are a lot of people on here with a whole wealth of knowledge and i'm sure someone will be able to offer some advise.

go give dylan a big hug from me :huggles:

welcome to k9,

Becky

Hi,

I'm really sorry to hear about Dylan.

I've never heard of that tumour before and can't help but I'm someone on here might have some advice for you.

What does your vet suggest for Dylan in the way of treatment ?

Hi,

The vet says that it usually happens to the leg or jaw and amputation is then a possibility but will still only extend life 4-6 months.

Apparently it is a very agressive form of cancer and as with humans there is no cure.

It seems to be more common in 'long boned' dogs but my vet does not treat enough whippets to say how common. He has seen it in great danes and greyhounds but only in their legs.

He has been a vet for 30 years and has never seen a dog get over this so I know what the outlook is.

I would just like to hear from anyone who knows anything about it and how do I prepare Dylan and my family for this.

Thanks for replying

Liz

HI LIZ,

REALLY SORRY TO HEAR YOUR SAD NEWS.

MY COUSIN AS JUST HAD HER DOG GO THROUGH ALL THE SAME TESTS,LUCKILY HE ONLY HAD A SLIPPED DISC,BUT AT FIRST THEY THOUGHT IT WAS A TUMOUR.

SO SHE DID A GOOGLE SEARCH ON THE CONDITION THAT INVOLVED A TUMOUR AND GOT A LOT OF INFORMATION.

ITS WORTH A TRY TO SEE IF IT ANSWERS ANY OF YOUR QUESTIONS.

I KNOW IT WILL BE A HARD TIME FOR YOU ALL AND IM SURE EVERYONE ON HEAR WILL BE THINKING OF YOU ALL,AND WOULD BE ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP WHERE POSSIBLE.

BEST REGARDS TRISH

HE HAD XRAYS THEN WENT ON TO HAVE A SCAN WHICH INVOLVED DYE INJECTED INTO HIM.

THATS WHEN IT SHOWED UP TWO DISCS PRESSING ON HIS SPINAL CORD.

HIS SPINES A LOT BETTER NOW AFTER 12 WEEKS REST,BUT UNFORTUNATLEY AS SINCE HAD TWO STROKES.

HE IS ALSO 10 YEARS OLD.

JUST WANT TO SAY HIS SPINAL PROBLEM STARTED WITH PAIN AND LIMPING.

Thanks for that.Very sad though that he,s had the strokes.I hope he can enjoy life as best he can.I am very interested in the scan as Dylan has only been diagnosed from xrays so your comments re your cousins dog are most helpful.Wish them both all the best.

If Dylans only had the xrays it might be worth getting a scan done...it'll help put your mind to rest and get a final answer once and for all.

Sending :huggles: for Dylan and my thoughts are with you.

Sorry have no exprience of this sort.

Hope you find the best treatment for Dylan.

I am sorry to hear about Dylan.

My Borzoi had osteosarcoma in his hock. He started off with lameness that could not be identified and it was not until the first sign of a swelling on his leg, which was the start of the tumour, was he properly diagnosed. I did not want his leg amputated so my Vet prescribed PLT (prednoleucotropin) which worked well for him by stopping the pain and thus letting him become sound again. The tumour got progressively bigger until one day the skin on the hock just split asunder and I am afraid the inevitable was to have him PTS. He was just 10 years old as well.

I can't remember exactly what time period this happened over but it was months rather than weeks, I am fairly sure.

We had a lurcher had osteosarcoma in the shoulder. Like Dessies 'zoi we kept him going about 6 month's on a cocktail of drugs. But the end is inevitable. Unfortunately there is no easy way to part with a dog you have my deepest sympathy.

Don't want to raise your hopes but we has a whippet show up lumps on the bone (on her foot). We expected the worse as did our general practice vet. A visit to a sighthound specialist proved the lumps were just nodules on the bone. A long rest & medication & she was up & running again.

I hope there is a happy ending to this for you. If not you can only make sure Dylan has the best month's of his life in those remaining for him.

Poor wee man. So sorry to hear this :(

Is he insured?

If so maybe worth asking your vet if Chemotherapy is an option?

I had a whippet with Lymphoma & by having Chemo it extended her life span by over a year and a half.

She sailed through the treatments & we treasured EVERY extra day we had with her.

Sorry not to be able to be of more help, very best of luck :luck: & big hugs to the little man :huggles:

Am so sorry for you Liz, have been thinking about your post all day, hope you may get some better news with a scan or whatever but our thoughts & hopes are with you & Dylan. What a sad story to start your joining to K9 with. Please feel free to message us further if you want too, we are a friendly bunch. Best of luck :luck: :luck: :luck:

Hi,

Thanks for that.Dylan has been limping since January but still eats well and looks well apart from his limp.So maybe I still have a couple of months with him.

Hi,

Yes he is insured so the money is no problem.I think I need to ask questions as I was so shocked when I was told I didn,t take anything in and now it seems there are ways to make it easier. Thanks

Welcome to K9. So sorry to hear about Dylan.

If the diagnosis is correct then I guess all you can do is make his last months the best possible, atleast the weather should be OK and he can enjoy lying in the sun with a nice tripe stick.

Dont worry about how to prepare Dylan - he has no idea and will just take each day as it comes. My friend has a Rottie with exactly the same thing as he has been on meds for 2 months and is still going out for walks. He is only 6 :(

We are preparing for some bad news about our old girl who has a lump on her spine - I think it's attached so she's having it checked out on Wed when she has a little op on her leg and a blood test done. It's been very tough but we have talked about what we will and wont do,as she has other complications, and also if it really comes to it how we want her to go to sleep. :( (At home) I wont make any big decisions until I've had a second opinion, but I am still keeping my fingers crossed that it's just a fatty cyst. :luck:
