It was good to see a great turn out at the last of our race event of the year well done to all the winners and competitors thanks to the helpers namely Lynn, Coatsy ,Grant ,Eddie the judge ,KIeran, the ring stweart Janet and the lure driver Graham. Since the club was formed in April 09 it has gone from strength to strenght now with 22 members I the secretary would like to thank some of the people who have made this possible firstly the committee who work away behind the scenes the members who attend the meetings Lynn for supplying beautiful cups thanks to some of the lurcher folk stormydog {john} Coatsy ,Grant who has slipped most dogs including my own a champion slipper in the making I think. Thanks to the the judges who I am pleased to say never had an easy job in picking the best out of so many tip top dogs A BIG THANK YOU TO VICTOR & LINDA for the use of the grounds A thank you to all that I have missed hope to see all the members at the A G M in Feburary WITHOUT THE PEOPLE WHO CAME FAITHFULLY WE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD A SHOW THANKS ;) :D :D

I had a good day and the friend I went with (we each brought 2 whippets) enjoyed her first time at Sporting Whippet club. The weather was dull but not so wet as to dampen enthusiasm. I am so thankful to all the people who make these events possible and to everyone who turns out and supports them. I used to want to race my dogs and there were no opportunities. When I got a year old rescued lurcher 5 years ago, I brought him and my whippet to gamefairs. The first one we went to was at Moira and although there was no plan to have whippet racing, Janet Duke prevailed on the organisers to let the whippets - all three of them - have their own racing heat. But that year and the next, separate races for whippets were the exception rather than the rule at lurcher events in N Ireland. Now they are the norm and there is good support as well for a designated whippet club.

I think at least 24 whippets raced on Sunday. The organisers can correct me or elaborate as they see fit. Some people reading this won't be familiar with the way Sporting Whippets are currently organising the race programme: Before the show there were grading heats of three dogs each. After the show each dog that got 1rst place ran as Grade A, all 2nd place as Grade B, all thirds as Grade C (except that not everyone stayed on for the post-show racing even though it wasn't late). They held two 3-dog heats for the young ones [6 dogs], and then two 3 dog heats for the grade A racers - each of those dogs had already won a 3 dog race I believe (6x3=18).

One of my dogs was then 2nd to Vixen and the other was 2nd to Cody; in the finals Cody and Vixen competed for top Grade A dog. Theoretically I think 1rst and 2nd in the semifinals should both go into finals - Tintreach hadn't raced Cody and Dóchas hadn't raced Vixen. But they were quite firmly beaten in the semis - or first post-grading heat, whatever you want to call it - and past experience would lead me to believe Cody and Vixen were sure to win the finals anyway. Also one of my dogs had made such a pest of himself catching the rag at the end and I was quite happy that everyone who wished got two runs for their dogs.

The other whippets in Dóchas' grading heat didn't offer him much competition but a fawn whippet was very close to Tintreach. Was that Flash or another grade B hound?

A couple of dogs caught up with the rag during the races, though I think mine got it after the finish. Sporting whippets do have a good arrangement for drawing the rag into a pipe which runs under a rug; the mophead just didn't manage to get down the "rabbithole" in time. This particular dog is often very persistent at the end of races. I got a suggestion to put some tape over the nose-end of the basket muzzle as he was able this time to grab the rag through his muzzle (and caught himself in it too, his neck was trapped in a sideways position when I caught up with him). What's this about lurcher people helping slip the whippets? If I had people to hold on to my two and slip them I would stay at the end to catch them because Tintreach is such an obstinate fellow.
