For ages, I've been frustrated that I couldn't find a spillproof travel bowl (like the Road Refresher) in stainless steel. I prefer not to use plastic. I know others say the same, although I can't remember if I've had this particular discussion here.

Anyway, if anyone else does feel the same, lookie here - I found one!

Stainless steel spillproof water bowl

I was puzzled at first as to how the dog would get at the water under the concave plate - then realised that the plate floated. That's very satisfyingly ingenious!

I do wonder if it would work so well for larger dogs with a tongue the size of a ladle - could it be a bit too shallow for them?

I've seen big dogs use them. Enough water seems to get through, it does slow them a bit but I don't think it's intended for quenching a big thirst after a long walk or lots of exercise; it's more for drinking while actually on the move - we have used the plastic version for years and the design works well for us. The saucer section can be removed to make it into a normal bowl when you stop.

I'm just so pleased to find a stainless steel version!

That is rather nice, not that I have a need for one! Glad you've been successful in your quest😊

Well, it arrived and it's going straight back.

Unfortunately the floating saucer section is plastic, and that defeats the purpose as I already have a plastic one and I specifically wanted stainless steel.

I may have found another one, I'll post back if it is successful

Sorry re your disappointment, JoanneF. I love gadgets. Hope you have more success with the replacement.

So, I found another one.

We've used it today in the van. It didn't spill (about ¾ full to the brim). The stainless steel saucer floats well, allowing through about the same amount of water as the traditional Road Refresher.

What I like is that it is made of stainless steel. What I don't like so much is that it doesn't have such a robust anti-spill design as the plastic Road Refresher; as it lacks the clip on rim that holds the saucer below the spill level. That probably means the saucer is slightly larger than it would need to be if there was a rim (more on that below). But, to be fair, although there was plenty of sloshing there was no spillage.

What I really don't like is that in order to get the saucer section out, you need a little hook (supplied) to hook into one of the holes to pull it out. It's not fiddly, but it's something else you need to carry - and find. If the saucer was a few mm smaller and held in by a proper - removable- rim, you could probably tip it upside down and let it fall out.

But that's the trade off for me because I really don't think the plastic is as hygienic and safe. In conclusion, I will keep using it but I will likely also keep looking for a better design.

I'm wondering if there's a way of attaching the hook to the bowl by a piece of string or thin chain, so you can't lose it. Or if you can find something else that will do the job which you'd always have on you. Tick remover maybe?

Yes, a piece of string is definitely do-able - great idea!
