Driving back from the hydrotherapy pool this afternoon, through the local lanes, some miles from anywhere, I met a terrier x (looked like a JRT x Beagle to me) walking down the middle of the road. Stopped the car, said hello to the little chap (he was very friendly), rang the number on his collar and luckily his owner was in. Secured him in the footwell of the car (whips were in the back) and drove him home. So far so good ...

... but her only 'concern' when I dropped him off was just how far from home he was. Apparently he is in the habit of taking himself out and about along the lanes, pays daily visits to the local farm, etc. etc., but doesn't usually go quite as far as he had today. She really wasn't remotely bothered that he was straying just surprised that he'd walked so far this time.

Now is it just me or is it downright irresponsible to knowingly allow your dog to take himself walkies, however quiet the roads he's on ... if I'd met him on a bend I might have swerved to avoid him and hit something, or hit him. I just don't get why some people have dogs

I would say it is irresponsible but some dogs are the exception to any rule .Bloke had terrier round our way that refused to sleep in the house lived in the barn and ended up being picked up anywhere in a twenty mile radius numerous times :)

One of my neighbours has always let her JRT roam the locality.

He used to come down to my house every morning and cock his leg on my GSDs beds in the back porch

He's stopped coming down since I got Poacher - she sees him as a white rabbit :-

You're right, Annie - the woman you met today is totally irresponsible. I know terriers are difficult to keep in sometimes but with a bit of effort I'm sure her garden could be secured!!!

There was a lab that lived 2 doors from us and he was a wanderer, was picked up a few times in leeds city centre and was always down the road at the butchers, the owners wasnt bothered and glady paid to get him out of the local pound  some folk just dont think of the dogs safety :(

 is she completely mad? he couldve been run over, or stolen, or trapped somewhere! if she doesnt want a pet that needs walking, has she considered a cat? or, more appropriately in this case, a radish...urgh!

We have a houdini beddy, he's the smallest dog we've ever had but he's the one we had to raise all our fences for. he never got out onto the road but would often climb the 3ft fence & wander into next doors house  But, we added some trellis onto the top of the fence & he hasn't done it since. It's all a matter of responsibility isn't it. It's up to the owner to make sure the dog doesn't get out, not to say they "cant keep them in"

I cringe when I see people walking their dogs along busy roads off lead but can't imagine what would make someone just open the door & let the dog take itself for a walk  Mine wouldn't last 5 minutes out by themselves :(

I took a setter cross back to it's owners four times. I kept finding her when I was on the way to visit my daughter. The last time I took her home I said it would be the last time the next time would be the RSPCA. Haven't seen her loose since and don't want to. She was a lovely dog, friendly and affectionate, her owners didn't deserve her.

Some people really shouldn't have dogs, now way he should be allowed out to wander on his own, absolutely anything could happen to him :(

W have a problem with next door and there JRT x yorkie. hes the one tat was savadegd buy a staffy last year and nearly died cos he was out off lead. I thought aftre that and aheffty vet bill they would fisrt of all stop chaining him up in the front garden its open no fencing and they would never just open the door and let him roam free again. but no 7am every morning were woken by him running roun the streets yaping. they seam to think if its earlie its ok. but all that need to happen is the staffy owners kids forget to shut there side gate and it gte out again and the JRTx yorke is toast cos tony wont be there next time to save it and they just stand there like muppets. If you ay anything like dont you what him they tell youhes there baby and they love him so much LOOKS LIKE IT
