I know this is an old post but i would reccomend a westie or border terrier. Borders woukd be my pick for your family. After you have picked your breed reads lots of books on the breed and meet as many as you can. Then read lots of dog behavior books and books on positive training. I did this and it helped me be very prepared when i got my first dog which was a Rottweiler. I also worked with a good behaviorist from day 1 to prevent issues rather fix them and it worked as hes a very well trained , well socialised dog.

Borders are very sweet natured and are great with kids.

I’d be concerned at taking on a rescue. We’ve always had rescues but we’ve been able to put in the time that’s required - they’ve all come with emotional baggage which we’ve been able to accommodate because we were able to be there. Taking on a waif and then leaving it for the majority of the day could increase the distress with which it arrived. I appreciate that this may not be the encouragement you’re seeking but I’m thinking of the dog - so many become rescues because owners (although well meaning at outset) haven’t been able to commit 100% to what’s required. Désolé.

You are right about them being great with kids. Once out they were terminators, Arnold wouldn't of stood a chance.
