I remember being a young lad seeing my dad biting the tails off jack russel pups and then dipping the stump into some sort of tar to keep them clean.

yep used to now a few old lads that swore biting them off was the best way?.

Be a bit chewy with some of the bigger breeds like Giant Schnauzers or Bouviers. :x

what is also worrying is the small amount of some of the native breeds we have who are bordering on endangered status and this sort of thing can be the kiss of death.dont say im exaggerating.when ear cropping(which im totally against)was banned in this country many moons ago,the manchester terrier nearly fell into extinction cos folk didnt like them with drop ears.so they didnt breed/buy them. the breed ended up with onely a couple of dogs left and were in a dire state. :( i just would hate this to happen to our native breeds who struggle for recognition and  only for a few dedicated breeders they would fade away.i was watching the crufts program last night and they were interviewing a guy from sweden about the docking ban over there and how it had affected breeds.he said that norwich fell to  dangerous number and there was another breed he mentioned as  getting dangerously low but i cant remember what it was.its allright for the larger more popular breeds but i do worry for our less popular native breeds that arent so glamorous and dont have a big following of supporters
Yes i too am very worried for the native breeds i breed smoth fox terriers which only had 78 entries at crufts and most champ shows are about 38 entries :( will people still want them with a curled tail? i do hope so they are such a fantastic pet a good gaurd dog loving to all children and can work and show highly itelligent and can turn there hand to anything. and easy to groom.!! i hope they come back into fashion soon befor there are none :( so peeps if yopu are looking for another puppy please chose best of brittish and stick with what we know best. not these fashionalbal dogs like labradoodles and such a terrier is reliable and dosent have any breeding defects that will affect it in later life.

In my books tail docking and dew claw removal are not at all in the same category.

The dew claw is an evolutionary remnant, totally redundant (like our appendix) and well on its way to disappearing altogether. The dog doesn't use it it for anything so long as it is removed safely I really cant see a problem

Tails however, are extremely useful to dogs; for balance and most importantly for communication....a tail is one of a dog's primary communication devices - so removing it is more akin to cutting out a person's tongue, than removing their appendix.

I have a friend who breeds Airdale terriers they only have a small part [length of a thumb nail] when a puppy taken off, but some breeds really dont have anything left at all.

I would really like to see things stay as they always have been :) but the powers to be

I would just like to add......quite a few years ago i bred a litter of of Jacks (5) & two were self docked, when i took them to my vets for their dew claws removed & the other 3 tails docked my vet was quite surprised that 2 were already docked  ......Has anybody else heard of puppies born self docked ?

if so how would this stand within the law.... (w00t)

I don't know about JRTs, but there are a few breeds such as OES and Pembroke Corgis where some dogs are born without tails.

In medical terms it is a genetic fault leading to a spinal deformity, and is often accompanied by other health problems. If two 'tailless' dogs are bred the pups rarely survive.

Hi caz it is said in some breeding books that when a whelping bitch gives birth to the puppies it is natural for them to sometimes chew the ends of the tails off. But not many maiden bitches do this. Unless they really know what they are doing it is sometimes done.
