The Chasing Instinct

How can you really enjoy a dog if every time you go for a walk, (that's if you walk your dogs) if you are always worried about injuries.???

I've heard of more dogs braking their legs or getting a serious injury in non ped racing than i have lurchers, so it can't be that safe.

And if anyone want to know why i came into non ped racing, i'm beginning to wonder that myself.,

okey doke...wtf???..is going on here...im usually on facebook cos its sooooo boring on here -_- and i find myself reading pages and pages of utter tripe :oops: ...pmsl...so im staying for a bit....let the battle commence :cheers: ....oh and i am the real YODA...and have pics to prove it...ill be back in a bit as my dogs :homestar: are out in the fields chasing things :charles: ....and rumour has it the bunny police are out tonight... :ph34r:

we are all good this end thanks di :thumbsup: ....and how did you know it was me??? :- ....and what do you mean how r the boys and karma????????? :eek: ..i thought we had met b4,,sorry my mistake i thought that was di that knew me really well and have spent loads of time with!!!! :oops: ...oh yes and my dogs....mother and son r great and karma is annoying!!!!...so i calculate that to be 2 girls and 1 boy....Derrrrr (w00t)

The only reason some dogs chasing instinct is improved after hunting quarry is because the more primeval instinct is being stimulated however, with those dogs that have an inseperable bond to their owner, persuading them to chase quarry can be just as futile as getting them to chase the lure.

However, with careful, repetitive training and positive feedback from an owner I do personally believe any dog can be persuaded to chase the lure sheerly through willingness to please. Someone recently spoke to me and said the thrill for them with owning a dog was finding out what makes them 'tick', I think they're comment was spot on.

Taking dogs lurcher racing IMO is a good way of building bad habits into a dog, it would be the last place I would take a non-ped whippet that had any sort of issue. For one (and I know some will dispute) the dogs have been bred for sprint racing and those that are fast simply do not have the ability to safely negotiate a lure course. Speed wise between peds and non-peds is probably about 8-10mph and anyone who's took a bend in their car at 10mph faster than they would normally knows that loosing control of your vehicle is highly likely. I personally think the same physics applies with racing dogs and it's probably why greyhound racing bodies are contemplating altering their own track bends because the greyhound is evolving into a faster breed too. My other issue with lurcher racing is the quality of ground, the lack of barrier protection to tracks and the dogs themselves, many of which are poorly trained for racing because lets face it anyone can enter a dog at a lurcher event and there are no governing bodies to protect the dogs. I've raced peds at lurcher events and can honestly say I feel a lot happier using them to train non-ped racers at club racing. I think this says it all really.

In my experience of owning dogs, I'd say no two are the same, they're all different and very much the individual and what works for your first dog may not work for your second, third etc.

As for Hubble, well as I'm quite familiar with him and his relatives, I'd say hunting ain't going to wake up his synapses. I'm also a bit perplexed as to why Emma's posted because the dog has been showing a gradual, positive interest in the lure. I actually think he's doing well considering his albeit limited time at the track and I expect with perseverance and commitment he'll be an excellent racing dog. I suspect Emma was meerly jesting at the fact he's got so excited with his first encounter with a hedgehog but it's been perceived that the dog isn't running for the lure and opened up an open debate for how to get a dog chasing the lure when really this isn't the case.

I agree with hell of a lot of what you've said Jacs but i was merely having a laugh with this lady, some one else took the topic to another level, not me., all thou i agree non peds are not built for turning i also think it depends on the % of what breed is in them, (size i mean) but then i bet there was a few whippet/greys in the Waterloo Cup all those years ago. :lol: still a good topic thou, :thumbsup: Di
