Apparently Lurchers (and that must include ALL whippets) are the 2nd favourite of dog thieves...the 1st being Staffs, and sorry all good Staff owners, but I wish most would get nicked and were never seen again, but then again probably most don't live round here where they are owned by the most unworthy (being polite)...Still, keep an eye on your dogs...

No John that wasnt a good natured dog that tore your poor Chloe, it was an untrained dog like the jack russel that attacked our staff and had to be draged off by my son as our staff would not fight back. He could be a killing machine like any untrained dog. But I trust him more than alot of whippets. All our staffs were trained to the highest level, and have lived eaten and slept with our whippets.

This was the result of a 2 young staffs off their leads on the beach-fortunately only one tore at Kim (who was pregnant at the time and on her lead-along with our others)

The owner who later legged it said they were young and playing!

It was 12 year old (at the time) Harry's foot that made them finally leave us alone.

Our dogs weren't barking or anything to upset these dogs-it could well have been a young child attacked.

They weren't even on the beach like the loose pair-they were walking with us on the promenade and the staffs left the beach to get to them.

pauline

the owner said it had done like that before and it was never aggressive towards any dog/dogs all i am saying is it is in there nature to fight and they can snap at any time, very unpredictable breed people don"t realise what they have on the lead.

I do understand what you are saying John, and there are some very bad owners out there that dont know what thay are doing. But I know my dog and I trust him, but then I wouldnt be silly enough to let two staffs free run together on a beach. Infact I wouldnt let a pair of our whippets free run together either. If our Double Impact was off the lead with one of her daughters and saw a rabbit thay would be off like a shot to kill it.

We have gone off thread here anyway, the staffs are top of the list for stolen dogs because thay are needed by sick idiots who tape up there muzzles so thay cant fight or bit , to train a stronger staff to fight and kill.

What has happened to the breed over the years is the fault of humans not the breed. But please dont give them all the same stamp

i dont think all staffies should be tared with the same brush, :( but if i had been in johns shoes i think this one may of felt the brunt of my 12 bore  a lott of owners need to be more responsible for any dog they keep it just seems a lott dont bother to put them on leaders in public places

Podges sister and her husband show staffies and is one of the top breeders in the country she has bred and shown them for 25yrs she vets every home her pups go too if she has to rehome one she makes sure biches are spayed and dog homes are vetted she has brought a family up with them my sister has took 3 staffie bitches off her as they were no good for showing and they are most loving dogs she also has a family. i would say my whippets are more bad temper towards other dogs than hers. so i think it has a lot to do with owners.

I'm sure there are some great 'pet' staffs out there-

A friend of ours is on the field regularly with his 'softie'

A bloke walks by every evening with 2 he shows-but since our whippet was attacked all I feel is panic when I see them approaching-

I cross the road very quickly....

Does anyone know if they use staffs for killing badgers-serious question-not having a go at the breed.

Karen

Karen I feel the same. Since our dogs we attacked by a staffie last year, Im scared to walk our's. I will take Robbie to the park, but I do have a metal pole and will use it if need be.

I know not all Staffies / dogs are bad, but I wont take the chance now. If it looks like fighting with my dog, its a metal pole over the head now.

Ive raised a few aphane badgers over the years Karen, the ones who have been caught in the act normally have small cross terriers. I dont know of any cases where a staff was used, but thay will use anything thay can train to kill thats strong enough to kill a badger without being to big.
